Rooney’s dream boss and Carsley’s chance to shine

Wayne Rooney threw a major curveball into England’s managerial search by claiming Pep Guardiola would be the perfect man to succeed Gareth Southgate. Obviously, the Manchester City mastermind is a dream candidate, but there won’t be any immediate thought of that as Lee Carsley takes temporary charge.

Rooney is a seasoned football mind himself, and there’s probably not too much about management that he doesn’t know. One feels a lot of admiration for Guardiola’s style in his tone; it is to the Spaniard’s credit and the effect he has on the game that even players of the quality of Rooney see him as the pinnacle. But he is a realist, too, and he quickly mentions Lee Carsley, a former colleague and highly rated young coach.

Carsley, the man behind England’s Under-21s European Championship triumph, takes a step up to the senior role with a blend of experience and youthful exuberance. Much similar to Southgate, he has done that journey through the youth setup. This is clearly a massive opportunity for Carsley to show his managerial acumen through to the biggest stage.

The football world is going to focus on this: will Carsley, with his really good record at junior ranks, be able to transfer that over to this level? The acid test really comes in the Nations League games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

As far-fetched as Rooney’s Guardiola dream may be, it speaks of the kind of ambition needed if English football is to start rising through the ranks. For now, however, all eyes will be on Carsley. How he fares over the next few months will go a long way toward shaping England’s football future.

It is a defining moment for English football. The dawn of a new age looms, and with it the quest for that leader. Be it Carsley and some temporary solution or Guardiola with his long-term vision, finding that ideal manager is not going to be any easy search. One thing’s for sure: a lot is riding on this, and the nation holds its breath, watching and waiting to see how it will turn out.
