C.J. Gardner-Johnson is in motion again, his third consecutive offseason with a new location.

The Houston Texans are reportedly acquiring the experienced safety from the Philadelphia Eagles for offensive lineman Kenyon Green, according to Tuesday’s report from NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.
The trade, according to Tuesday’s report by NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, will also see the Texans receive a 2026 sixth-round selection, while a 2026 fifth-round draft pick is the compensation for the Eagles.

This deal looks like a home run for both franchises. Houston gains a veteran and versatile safety in Gardner-Johnson, a defender who is proven at making plays in the secondary. With Eric Murray departing for Jacksonville, the Texans had a definitive need at defensive back, and this pick-up shores up their roster.

Philadelphia, in turn, is making an intelligent gamble on Green, a one-time first-round draft pick who has not yet reached expectations. The Eagles have a well-documented history of resuscitating the careers of disappointing first-round picks, and Green might be the next player to enjoy their system’s benefit.

One of the best examples of this strategy succeeding is Mekhi Becton. In 2024, Philadelphia gambled on the former first-rounder, and under the tutelage of offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, Becton flourished at guard. The Eagles now seek to do the same with Green.

General manager Howie Roseman is again playing with a forward eye, coming off a Super Bowl win. The youth and depth in the Eagles’ secondary enabled him to take advantage of Gardner-Johnson’s trade value and fill a glaring need on the offense line. With Becton exploring the free-agent landscape, Roseman saw no need to wait to get a possible replacement in Green, still seeing a lot of upside in the young lineman.

This move aligns with Roseman’s proactive approach, ensuring Philadelphia stays competitive by addressing roster needs before they become pressing issues. Green’s struggles in Houston don’t necessarily define his future—sometimes, a new environment and the right coaching staff can unlock untapped potential.

For Houston, this deal represents their investment in becoming better defensively. Gardner-Johnson is an energetic, leader-type player with a high competitive level, and all of those things should translate well to the Texans as they keep adding pieces to a stout roster. He will be a stabilizing presence in the secondary and add to a unit that required it.

In the end, this trade gives both sides something they can use. The Eagles are taking a low-risk gamble on a player with potential, and the Texans are getting a proven playmaker to add to their defense. Only time will tell what happens, but on paper, the trade makes a lot of sense for both teams.
