Golden Globe-winning actress Olivia Hussey, celebrated for her portrayal of Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, has passed away peacefully at her home at the age of 73, her family confirmed on Friday.
“Olivia was a remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and pure kindness touched the lives of all who knew her,” her family shared in a heartfelt statement on Instagram. “She lived a life full of passion, love, and dedication to the arts, spirituality, and kindness towards animals. As we grieve this immense loss, we also celebrate Olivia’s enduring impact on our lives and the industry.”
Hussey rose to fame as a teenager with her poignant portrayal of Juliet, a role that earned her a Golden Globe for “new star of the year.” Romeo and Juliet became a global sensation, securing four Academy Award nominations and winning two, for best cinematography and best costume design.
Following her breakout success, Hussey continued to captivate audiences with memorable roles in films such as the 1974 cult classic Black Christmas and the 1978 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile.
Hussey’s legacy is carried forward by her husband, David Eisley, their three children, and a grandchild. Her family described her as a beacon of warmth and creativity whose contributions to the arts and her compassion will be cherished forever.
