Kate Beckinsale has revealed the devastating news that her beloved mother, actress Judy Loe, has passed away at the age of 78. In a deeply emotional Instagram post, the 51-year-old actress shared that her mother died in her arms on the night of July 15 after enduring “immeasurable suffering.”

This heartbreaking loss comes just 18 months after the death of Beckinsale’s stepfather, director Roy Battersby, who passed away in January 2024.

Sharing a series of personal photos and raw reflections, Beckinsale admitted she feels “paralysed” by grief.

“She died the night of July 15th in my arms after immeasurable suffering,” Beckinsale wrote. “I don’t want to post this. I am only posting because I’ve had to register my mother’s death certificate, and it will soon be public record.”

The actress noted she hasn’t yet been able to sift through her camera roll to choose the “best” photos or videos of her mother, explaining that the pain is simply too great right now.

Though the cause of death has not been publicly confirmed, Beckinsale has previously spoken about her mother’s long battle with cancer. In her heartfelt tribute, she described Judy Loe as “brave in so many ways,” highlighting her mother’s kindness, strength, and capacity for forgiveness.

“She believed in the ultimate good in people — sometimes too much,” Beckinsale reflected. “The world is so dim without her that it is nearly impossible to bear. Mama, I love you so much.”

Beckinsale apologised to any of her mother’s friends who may be learning of the news through her post or the press, admitting she feels unable to even look through her mother’s phone at this moment.

“I am paralysed,” she wrote. “Jude was the compass of my life, the love of my life, my dearest friend. The vastness and huge heart of this tiny woman touched so many people who love her dearly.”

Reflecting on a lifetime of loss, Beckinsale acknowledged the weight of compounded grief. Her father, actor Richard Beckinsale, died suddenly in 1979 at the age of 31 — a trauma that shaped her childhood.

“My greatest fear as a child has come true,” she wrote.

She also expressed her gratitude to her mother’s closest friends for their unwavering support, writing: “I wanted my mum’s dearest and oldest friends in her hospital room with her. Sylvia and Chris, please know I’m trying to keep the Four Teens going as best as I can from a distance, and I love you both.”

In a bittersweet moment, Beckinsale offered a touch of humour, jokingly apologising to hospital staff for having been “subject to [her] dreadful singing” during the painful final days.

Through it all, Beckinsale’s tribute painted a portrait of a mother remembered not just for her bravery and kindness, but for the fierce, enduring love she shared with her family and friends.
