A$AP Rocky has been acquitted of all charges in his gun assault trial, dodging what would have been a lengthy prison sentence. The celebrity case, which revolved around charges filed by former friend A$AP Relli, ended with the Los Angeles jury delivering a not guilty verdict on two counts of felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm.
The decision was greeted with an emotional response from Rocky, whose true name is Rakim Athelaston Mayers. The moment the jury’s verdict was announced, the 36-year-old artist jumped into the art gallery to hug his long-time girlfriend, Rihanna. Overwhelmed with appreciation, he looked at the jurors and acknowledged, “Thank y’all for saving my life.”
Rihanna, who sat in on the closing arguments of the trial with the couple’s two young children, later posted about her reaction on Instagram. “The glory belongs to God and God alone! Thankful, humbled by his mercy!” she wrote, praising the not-guilty verdict.
The trial, which took over two weeks, was centered on allegations made by Terell Ephron, also referred to in the hip-hop scene as A$AP Relli. He claimed that Rocky shot two times at him during an altercation in Hollywood in 2021, one of which supposedly grazed his knuckles. The defense, however, replied that Rocky had shot a prop gun, not an actual weapon, which he had borrowed from a music video set for security purposes.
Rocky, an internationally known artist in the music world after coming into prominence early in the 2010s, had turned down a plea agreement before the trial, holding fast to his innocence. If the jury had come up with a different verdict, he stood to have been sentenced to as long as 24 years in prison.
The court was filled with fans during the hearing, among them Rihanna, who went with their two-year-old son, RZA Athelaston Mayers, and one-year-old Riot Rose Mayers. The trial, characterized by conflicting statements and dramatic accusations, generated huge media interest.
Rocky’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, who has represented Donald Trump in the past, mounted a robust defense, depicting Relli as a money-grabber. He cited taped phone calls and text messages in which Relli supposedly said he was going to “take Rocky for millions.” The prosecution played the recordings in court, but Relli claimed they were doctored.
Throughout the trial, prosecutors maintained that Rocky had indeed used a real firearm and that Relli was the victim of a genuine assault. Deputy District Attorney Paul Przelomiec argued that Relli’s legal actions stemmed from being targeted in an actual crime, emphasizing, “Mr. Ephron wants to get paid because he was the victim of a real crime by a real gun.”
In spite of the prosecution’s arguments, the case was not an easy one. A$AP Twelvyy, also a member of the A$AP Mob group, testified that he had witnessed the altercation and corroborated the defense’s contention that Rocky had discharged blanks. In Twelvyy’s account, all the people in attendance were aware that the firearm was fake and that the “shots” were only intended to serve as warning to dissuade Relli from assaulting a fellow member of their crew.
One of the most contentious elements of the trial was the lack of physical evidence. No weapon was ever brought to court, and it wasn’t until the trial commenced that the defense formally asserted the gun was a prop. This revelation at the last minute caused Przelomiec to doubt the claim, asserting that such information “defies all reason” considering the three-year time lapse between the event and the trial.
Surveillance camera video footage from the area was shown as evidence, and a witness testified that they had heard gunshots coming from the seventh floor of a building across the street. Although no definitive physical evidence was found to conclusively support either side, the defense was able to effectively raise doubts about the prosecution’s assertions.
The other point of conflict came when Rocky tour manager Lou Levin carelessly referred to in court that Rocky was facing 24 years of prison time. Jurors were not permitted to know about the potential outcome if they found him guilty, since such information might sway them. Even though the judge ordered the jury to ignore the comment, prosecutors maintained that it had been an intentional effort to influence the jury towards Rocky.
The not-guilty verdict brings an end to a closely followed legal fight by fans and industry professionals alike. For Rocky, the ruling is a huge relief, enabling him to continue without the specter of prison time looming over his career and personal life.
As he exited the courtroom, Rocky looked visibly relieved. Fans cheered outside, rejoicing at the verdict that saved him from a life-changing sentence. Rihanna, by his side, experienced the moment with a mix of pride and relief. The verdict not only confirms Rocky’s innocence in the eyes of the law but also enables him to go back to his family and career without the burden of this case looming over his future.
With this chapter under his belt, the rapper can now concentrate on fresh music, entrepreneurship, and domestic bliss. As much as legal trials leave an indelible mark, A$AP Rocky’s acquittal serves to preserve his legacy, untainted by the accusations that threatened to bring it all crashing down.
