England captain Ben Stokes could miss next month’s Test series against Sri Lanka after suffering an injury while playing for the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred. The incident happened at Old Trafford as Stokes was trying to run between the wickets while chasing a target of 153 against Manchester Originals. The first Test in the series against Sri Lanka starts on August 21 at the same venue, and now he is doubtful for the contest.
The 33-year-old Stokes had faced just four deliveries, scoring two runs, when he pulled up, clutching his left hamstring. It looked like he had injured it while trying to sprint a quick single from the non-striker’s end. Stokes punched his right thigh in obvious frustration before being helped off the field by two members of the Superchargers staff.
There was instant concern for Stokes’ wellbeing as he was stretchered off and wheeled towards an ambulance. In a somewhat reassuring sign, though, Stokes returned to the dugout an hour or so later. A Superchargers spokesperson said that Stokes was undergoing assessment on his hamstring with a further update to come in the morning.
Harry Brook, who played as a substitute fielder for Stokes, mentioned to Sky Sports, “It doesn’t look great, unfortunately, but I think he’ll be getting a scan tomorrow and see how he is.”.
Stokes’ potential loss is a major blow to England, already reeling from news that opening batsman Zak Crawley will miss the first Test against New Zealand with a fractured finger. Dan Lawrence is set to open in his place, Jordan Cox called up as extra batting cover. Should Stokes fail to feature, vice-captain Ollie Pope might be asked to captain England in his first international game as captain.
Stokes has been inspirational on the field for England, particularly in their recent 3-0 series win over the West Indies. His availability with both bat and ball—as he has returned to fitness following winter surgery on his left knee—provided the balance the team needed. His absence would thus come as a blow, and it is in this light that England’s performance in the series against Sri Lanka may be affected.
Now, the cricketing world holds its breath for the result regarding Stokes’ assessment. His fitness will be of essence not only for the series against Sri Lanka but also for morale and strategy for the whole team if he is one of the most influential players for England.
