Yesterday, Kylie Jenner celebrated her 27th birthday, but big sis had something to remind her of—after all, she’s basically 30. Posting in homage on Instagram, supermodel Kendall Jenner shared a shot from yesteryear; the two children featured in it. Still, it was in the caption where most of the fun came: “Guess who’s basically 30 now? “—tagging Kylie.
That lighthearted jab wasn’t a tease for nothing; it was Kendall’s way of turning the table on Kylie, who famously poked fun at Kendall for her age during a past episode of The Kardashians.
The sisterly banter has its roots in a viral moment from the reality show where Kylie casually remarked to Kendall, “These are our years, Kendall. I’m 25. You’re like 30—” In amusement, Kendall quickly corrected her with a laugh, saying, “I’m 27!” Undeterred, Kylie shot back, “You’re basically 30.” Well, the exchange fast went on to become a fan favorite; now, a year later, Kendall is the one getting the last laugh.
Kendall wasn’t the only one who re-lived the memory. The Kardashians official TikTok account reposted the clip since it was Kylie’s big day, really enshrining things in the historical archives of the Kardashian clan.
While Kendall and the entire social media were live and hyped for the occasion, Kylie remains uncharacteristically quiet online. As of now, she hasn’t posted anything on her Instagram to commemorate her birthday, which is quite surprising, considering how active she usually is on the platform. Her low profile for this big day may be attributed to her usually private nature, more so when it involves her personal milestones.
“Anyone that has sisters knows that the two of us are just intrigued, and that intrigue is multiplied many, many times over when your sisters are both famous and have exceptionally distinct dispositions. When talking to Jennifer Lawrence for the winter 2023 issue of Interview magazine, Kylie gave a bit of insight into this sisterly love. For example, the interview started with Lawrence exclaiming: “You and Kendall couldn’t be more different. I always think of us as two peas in a pod, two little Leo babies whirling around in circles, open-mouthed at the moon, like a pair of happy, excited golden retrievers, whereas I feel like you and Kendall …”. Kylie agreed with the comparison but confessed that they had different personalities. According to Kylie, that actually brought them closer, especially through Kendall’s relationship with Kylie’s daughter, Stormi. “Her bonding with Stormi has brought us closer,” Kylie said. She shared further that she and Kendall have big personalities, but that it is not something that has ever caused friction between them.
Instead, very different tastes and interests have served to bring them closer together, without struggling for the same thing. Just in the latest example of the special bond the two sisters share, Kendall’s playful birthday tribute makes sure that the two, although they may have their differences, are closer than ever—also with room for humor and love. With each year that goes by and the birthday jabs that ensue, it’s already safe to say that the Jenner sisters have managed to constantly find new means of keeping each and every one of them entertained.
