Jack Black’s decision to cancel Tenacious D’s tour following a controversial joke by his bandmate, Kyle Gass, has sparked backlash among fans. The fallout began after Gass made an off-color comment about a recent assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
During a performance in Sydney on Sunday, July 14, Gass quipped, “Don’t miss Trump next time,” after Black presented him with a birthday cake and invited him to make a wish. The joke came just hours after an attempt on Trump’s life at a Milwaukee, Pennsylvania rally, which resulted in the former President sustaining a minor injury and a spectator’s death.
In response, Black announced on Tuesday that he was blindsided by Gass’s remark and decided to cancel the tour. He stated, “I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form.”
Fans quickly took to social media to express their confusion and anger over Black’s decision. One user wrote, “Jack Black turning on Kyle Gass is legitimately upsetting to me,” while another commented, “I’m upset at Jack Black for turning his back on a 30-year-long partnership for the sake of keeping celebrity status.” A third user added, “Not Jack Black throwing Kyle Gass under the bus for making a joke about Trump. What an absolute coward.”
Some fans speculated that there might be deeper issues within the band, suggesting that this incident was merely a surface-level excuse for underlying tensions.
