Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. are two of the most iconic rappers of all time. Both of them have left an indelible mark on the hip-hop genre and their influence is still felt today. But did they ever meet?
The answer is yes. Tupac and Biggie first met in 1993 on the set of Poetic Justice, a John Singleton-directed film starring Janet Jackson alongside Pac and Regina King. In a later interview, Biggie would recall Pac bumping his debut single “Party and Bullshit” repeatedly.
At the time, Tupac was already a well-known rapper, having released his debut album 2Pacalypse Now in 1991. Biggie, on the other hand, was just starting out in the rap game and was still relatively unknown. Despite their differences in fame, the two rappers hit it off and became good friends.
The two rappers would collaborate on several tracks together, including “Runnin’ (Dying to Live)” and “Runnin’ (Dying to Live) Part II”. Both of these tracks were released on Tupac’s posthumous album The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory.
Tupac and Biggie also had a friendly rivalry. They would often challenge each other to rap battles and freestyle sessions. They even had a friendly rivalry in the studio, with each trying to outdo the other.
Unfortunately, their friendship was short-lived. In 1996, Tupac was gunned down in Las Vegas. His death was a huge blow to the hip-hop community and to Biggie in particular. Biggie was devastated by the news and paid tribute to his fallen friend in his song “Long Kiss Goodnight”.
Despite their short-lived friendship, Tupac and Biggie left an indelible mark on the hip-hop genre. Their influence is still felt today and their music continues to inspire new generations of rappers. They may have only met once, but their legacy will live on forever.
