Charlize Theron Defends Opera and Ballet After Timothee Chalamet’s Controversial Remark

Charlize Theron has come to the very strong defense of opera and ballet following the comments of Timothee Chalamet, who was criticized by many in the entertainment and arts sector. The actress who studied to be a ballet dancer and later turned out to be one of the most esteemed stars in Hollywood termed the remarks made by Chalamet as reckless and contended that live forms of art should be given much more respect and encouragement.

The discussion started earlier this year when Timothee Chalamet was seen in a CNN and Variety town hall event in the promotion of his film, Marty Supreme. When discussing the future of movie and theater experiences, Chalamet noted that he had no desire to see movies turn into ballet or opera where performers are attempting to keep this thing alive when no one cares about it anymore.

His words instantaneously caused a vehement response on the web. The statement was perceived as an unfair dismissal of two of the oldest and most revered performance traditions in the world by many people working in the arts. The statement was criticized by opera companies, ballet institutions, performers, as well as fans because it did not take into account the cultural value and emotional impact that those arts still have.

In an interview with The New York Times, Charlize Theron was questioned about the controversy later. The actress did not conceal her disappointment. Oh, boy, I hope I bump into him some day. That was a very cavalier thing to say about an art form, two art forms, that we have to elevate day in, day out, because, yes, they have a difficult time. But in 10 years, AI will be able to do the job that Timothee does, but never be able to replace someone on a stage dancing live.

The reaction of Theron soon attracted attention due to hitting a bigger problem of the entertainment industry. In recent years, the extent to which artificial intelligence might impact actors, writers, filmmakers, and creative professionals, has become a growing concern. As technology keeps improving, Theren said that live performances have something very human to them and this cannot be easily copied.

This is the special kind of energy of seeing a dancer on the stage or an opera singer singing in the theatre. All the movements, all the notes, all the feelings are taking place in the present moment. As much as two performances may have the same choreography or score, they can never be exactly the same. It is that uncertainty and emotional attachment that make people crave going back to live theater, dance, and opera.

The remarks of Theron were also weighted with additional weight due to her personal experience with ballet. Prior to becoming an Academy Award winning actress, she used to train hard as a dancer. She attended the Joffrey Ballet School in New York and started dancing at a tender age of four years. Ballet was not a mere childhood activity. It was a significant aspect of her life and self.

Throughout her life, Theron was also physically challenged as she sought to realize that dream like many professional dancers. Later, she was forced to quit dancing due to a knee injury, which was a blow to her career. Nevertheless, she has frequently talked of the discipline and strength ballet provided her.

Ballet has been known to require exceptional dedication of the performers. Dancers take years of training their bodies, learning technique, gaining strength and practicing hours a day. Achievement in ballet can be the end result of years of sacrifice, physical suffering, and emotional stress. Theron has already talked previously of how those experiences have taught her to be focused, patient and determined.

The same degree of dedication is held by opera. Singers spend decades to build their voices, learning languages and playing complicated works. These performances are usually done by large groups of artists, musicians, costume designers and stage crews collaborating to produce one performance. To individuals in these worlds, it can be terribly dismissive to be told that no one cares about opera or ballet.

Meanwhile, others think that Chalamet might not have targeted the arts per se. He might have been referring more to the shifting habits of the new audiences and the fear that the old forms of entertainment are having difficulties with younger generations. The consumption of entertainment has changed with the advent of streaming services, short videos, social media, and digital content. Live performances in such an environment are not always an easy task.

Nonetheless, numerous artists believe that the challenge does not imply irrelevance. Ballet and opera have remained through wars, political turmoil, economic meltdowns and significant technological shifts throughout centuries. They have fitted new audiences, new styles of storytelling and new platforms. Numerous contemporary ballet troupes and opera houses today experiment with new themes, variety of casting and online outreach in order to keep in touch with younger audiences.

It is also a trend amongst younger audiences to rediscover live performance. A ballet or opera first-time attendants are often amazed by the moving and strong feelings the performance evokes. Live performance brings a common environment between the audience and the performers compared to viewing something on a phone screen. Such an emotion cannot be explained until one feels it himself.

It might have sounded mean of Theron to criticize Chalamet, but it was a common voice of frustration in the arts sector. Most performers believe that live art forms are undervalued or even disregarded as old fashioned, elitist, or trivial when they are really years of talent, training, and dedication.

A key fact in the entertainment industry today has also been brought to light as a result of the discussion. There is no need to have movies, streaming content, theater, ballet, and opera competing with each other. They are allowed to co-exist and have various uses to various audiences. One can be a fan of blockbusters, another is a fan of dance performance, and the third can be both.
