For hours, PlayStation users around the world have been left in the dark as the PlayStation Network (PSN) experienced a widespread outage that began on Friday evening. The disruption has affected multiple services, including account management, online gaming, social features, the PlayStation Store, and even the PlayStation Direct website. The outage has, for many, disrupted their plans to play and has left some unable to access games they already paid for. Widespread frustration has resulted from this. The problem has also rendered the online features of popular games like Fortnite, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, and Marvel Rivals unavailable.
Even the normally isolated single-player games are affected, as this outage has disrupted license verification. Players are currently unable to play their downloaded content. Sony recognizes the problem in its support page, stating it is working diligently to resolve it as soon as possible. Too little, too late for most users, however. According to DownDetector, a website that tracks service outages, the problems began just before midnight on Friday. At its peak, more than 71,000 users reported issues with the PSN. Social media platforms have been flooded with complaints from gamers worldwide, with many expressing their frustration over the prolonged downtime. Jeff Thigpen, a 48-year-old gamer from Dallas, shared his experience with the BBC.
“At my job, I have an hourly rotation, and during my break, I’ll occasionally get on my PlayStation Portal,” he said, referring to the handheld device that streams games from a user’s console or via the cloud.
“Tonight, I tried and was unable to play any of the games I purchased.”. Paying a monthly fee for their service is one thing, but not being able to play games that we’ve purchased is something that’s beyond frustrating.” The timing of the outage has only added to the frustration. Connor Clarke, who runs the Sheffield Games Collective, pointed out that this weekend is particularly significant for the gaming community.
“This is doubly frustrating because it’s an eventful weekend for the game-sphere,” he added. “There is a free beta for one of the games everybody is all over this quarter called Monster Hunter Wilds, and a double XP weekend in Call of Duty Black Ops 6.”. I think that there must be thousands, if not millions, of gamers globally and in the UK who are pretty annoyed because they cannot play at present. Clarke also noted that while PSN outages are not uncommon, they typically last only a couple of hours. “This one has been over 12 hours,” he said. “It’s very frustrating. I’m unable to play multiplayer, and more frustratingly, I’m unable to play any of my downloaded single-player games because PlayStation says it is unable to verify my licenses.” The outage has reignited discussions about the reliance on online services for gaming. Many players have expressed their dissatisfaction with the fact that even single-player games, which should theoretically be playable offline, are affected by server issues. For those who have invested heavily in their digital game libraries, the inability to access their purchases has been a stark reminder of the potential downsides of an increasingly digital gaming landscape.
As the hours go by, frustration among the users has instead grown because the solution is yet to be achieved. Sony promised the players it is working on the issue; however, a clear explanation from the company with an estimated time of when full services will resume is yet to be provided.
For now, gamers sit idle with their controllers still and their screens dark. The outage is a reminder of how integral online services have become to modern gaming—and how disruptive it can be when those services fail. As Jeff Thigpen put it, the situation is “beyond frustrating,” a sentiment echoed by countless others who just want to get back to playing the games they love.
BBC News has contacted both PlayStation and Call of Duty developer Activision Blizzard for comment, but at this point, there is no further update on when the issues will be resolved. Meanwhile, the gaming community remains on hold, hoping for a swift resolution to what has already been an unusually long and disruptive outage.
