Xbox Is ‘Evolving’ Rather Than ‘Losing’ Its Identity, Says Phil Spencer

Phil Spencer has spoken out against increasing fears from Xbox enthusiasts that Microsoft’s drive for a multiplatform approach could mean the brand is losing its identity. Xbox titles are appearing more and more on other platforms, which some believe the company will stray further away from what makes it different and lessen the allure of the brand’s hardware.

This became a reoccurring theme in numerous interviews conducted throughout the last week-including broadcasts with Gamertag Radio and with Destin Legarie. The approaches differed, but again, the theme was basically the same question: If Xbox exclusives are no longer the main focus, why should Xbox continue to be driven by investment in the necessary hardware?

Spencer head-on approached this issue, saying that Xbox is still committed to quality hardware. Whether it’s a console, a handheld, or innovation in cloud gaming, he thinks Xbox can be an attractive option for gamers.

Gamertag Radio brought up a pointed question about the future of Xbox hardware:

Gamertag Radio: “There is concern in the community about – well, you’re putting all these games on other platforms, why would I still want an Xbox? What is going to be the reason for me to want Xbox hardware when I can get that experience on another platform?”

Spencer replied, “Well, the heart of our strategy is innovation in hardware.

Phil Spencer : “I wish people were to choose hardware based on how that hardware excels at playing games and exactly how that fits with the choices I want to have about how do I want to play. We want our hardware to win from the capabilities on the hardware.

I think the difference that we have seen in the last 20 years – and I think this is good because I came from building games – is that it is really game-first, not platform-first. Most of the games that you and I will talk about run across so many different platforms. And those are the games that are having success, those are the games that are top of the charts when you look at the most played, most successful games. And I want to build a platform that services those creators.

[On our own hardware], I think it’s core to what Xbox is. In the seat that I am in, I look at hardware as absolutely fundamental to what we do, not trying to gatekeep the games off of other places for the benefit of [us]. Let’s go build innovative hardware that people want to use to play, whether that’s in their hands, whether that’s on their television, or even other places.

In another interview, Destin Legarie was a little direct asking Spencer whether there’s an element that Xbox could lose its identity, which Spencer was a little pushback with saying, ‘We are just changing instead of getting rid of something that has helped us,’ adding to making the game accessible in different places around the globe.

Destin: “Some fans are a little concerned about Xbox losing its identity maybe, what would you say to address those concerns for long-time fans?”

Spencer reassured fans that Xbox is still deeply committed to its legacy while adapting to the changing gaming landscape:

Phil Spencer: “I think our identity will continue to evolve, which it frankly always has, but when I hear concerns, I hear concerns about ‘is my library of games safe, am I still going to be able to play the games?’ and I think over the years, I’m proud of the commitment we’ve shown to respecting purchases on our platform through back compat, through Xbox Play Anywhere, through crossplay – things that we’ve done to enable people to continue to play, so I hear that.”

“I see the investments we’re making in platform and how we want Xbox to show up in multiple places and your library to be available there. this is all about making sure that your library of games that you own on Xbox are playable in multiple places, so I’d say it’s an evolution of our identity, but I believe it’s an identity that this industry needs.”.

When you think about where this industry is now, and you see the business challenges for many companies – for us to keep making games more accessible to more people has just got to be front and center for us as an industry, so we continue to see great games that we’ve seen over the years.

Spencer’s comments align with what Microsoft has been pushing in recent years—focusing on services like Xbox Game Pass, cloud gaming, and expanding access to games rather than solely relying on console sales. Xbox has positioned itself as more than just a hardware brand; it’s evolving into a broader ecosystem that allows gamers to play their favorite titles on multiple devices.

However, this change has not been without controversy. The fact that Xbox exclusives will appear on other platforms is a drastic shift from the mentality of console war, which has defined the industry for so long. For many, console exclusivity was equated with brand strength, and the thought of once-exclusive titles appearing on PlayStation or Nintendo Switch somehow feels like a watering down of Xbox’s essence.

Nevertheless, Spencer and his team seem convinced that the industry is changing and that clinging to the old business models may not be sustainable. Their goal is to embrace an approach that makes Xbox games accessible to as many players as possible while still innovating in hardware. Microsoft is betting that this will be a winning formula in the long run.

It looks like Xbox hardware will still dominate the horizon when such matters come along, Spencer emphasized. As with the recent breakthroughs into advanced technologies and modern cloud-based gaming innovations that the company’s investment would facilitate, this seems to stay its way at the heart of all video games and in leading gaming for whichever type may hit the world scene.

Time will tell how well this strategy will pay off, but one thing is for sure: Xbox isn’t disappearing—it’s transforming. Whether the long-time fans embrace this change or not will ultimately determine how well the brand navigates the ever-changing gaming landscape.
