Kim Kardashian makes a visit to Lyle and Erik Menendez in an outrage for the Netflix

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian has been in the news recently as she paid a visit to brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez, who have been convicted of murdering their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, within their Beverly Hills mansion back in 1989. Lyle was only 21, and Erik just 18 years old at the time of the crime. The visit is already widely publicized, especially considering it is occurring simultaneously with discussions that are ongoing with respect to the Netflix series about the case.

A vocal crime reform advocate in recent years, Kardashian may well have gone to see the brothers so that they could speak about their case and perhaps the very real possibility of having the case re-explored. The visit is just one more addition to a story that has lived inside the public consciousness for decades. The Menendez case exists solely upon the graphic nature and then the debate surrounding the motive of the brothers and possibly their defence.

But the crime itself, which took place on 20 August 1989, shocked the nation to its roots. Jose and Kitty Menendez, butchered with multiple shots at close range, lay in their plush Beverly Hills mansion. Their brothers, Lyle and Erik, were then in their early twenties but succeeded in escaping suspicion for some time. It came as a surprise when investigators dug deeper and discovered that the brothers had blown through what was a significant inheritance upon their parents’ deaths to spend over-the-top and exaggerated lifestyles and sprees of spending.

Eventually, both brothers confessed to killing the women, allegedly under a defense that they had been suffering years of physical, emotional and sexual abuses by their father. However absurd their defense might have sounded, they were convicted for first-degree murder and sent to prison for life without parole.

The case of the Menendez brothers over the years was set in the line of abuse, and the whole case earned sympathy from some people who think the life imprisonment imposed on them was too cruel considering the supposed trauma they experienced. This brought out enduring debate whether the trial was fair and whether the punishment was proper for them.

Not surprising at all that Kim Kardashian expressed interest in the case. She used her platform in order to bring to light several such high-profile cases of potential wrongful convictions or very unjust sentences. Her advocacy helped to bring Alice Marie Johnson out of jail in 2018, who was serving a life sentence for a non-violent drug offence. Since then, it has made Kardashian a strong voice in the movement of criminal justice reform in cases, especially those with a person of color or inequitably sentenced.

Details of Kardashian’s meeting with the Menendez brothers are private, but her visit surely has rekindled interest in the case. Some have raised the opinion that the production of the Netflix show could have much to do with Kardashian agreeing to meet the brothers. A show that has been linked to controversy promises to revisit the details of the case, bringing into light both the brutality of the crime and the brothers’ claims of abuse.

Speculation arose on timing that maybe she would be interested in lending her voice to the growing number of people who now believe that the Menendez brothers should be given some form of clemency or reduction in their sentences. Going by history and the successful interventions she did over similar cases, it’s not so farfetched to imagine that she would use her influence to draw attention to theirs.

But her role in the case has not gone unscathed by critics. Some argue that Kardashian is only fascinated with these high-profile cases for publicity, devoid of meaningful reform. Others hold the belief that whether this is publicity or otherwise, the fact remains that her attention brings massive input to possible concerns within the system of criminal justice.

Since the date for the release of the Netflix drama is nearing, the case of the Menendez brothers will likely pop up in public discourse once more. The brothers have served over thirty years in prison and have maintained to appeal for a retrial on the basis of fraud and miscarriage of justice during their initial trial. If that from Kardashian will make any difference, only time will tell.

It is just another chapter, for now, of Kim Kardashian visiting Lyle and Erik Menendez within the continued saga of their case, which raises so many questions on justice, redemption, and otherwise stubborn contradictions of the legal system.
