Ryan Gosling’s Ghost Rider Set for July 2028 Theatrical Release

Ryan Gosling’s Ghost Rider is officially heading toward a theatrical release in 2028, giving Marvel fans a new reason to look forward to the studio’s expanding superhero slate. The film, which will feature Gosling as the iconic Spirit of Vengeance, has been scheduled to arrive in cinemas on July 28, 2028. The project is expected to bring a fresh interpretation of one of Marvel’s darker and more supernatural characters while placing a major Hollywood star at the center of the story.

The announcement marks an important step forward for a project that has generated considerable curiosity since Gosling became linked to the role. Unlike some conventional Marvel superheroes, Ghost Rider occupies a much darker corner of the comic book universe. The character is closely associated with supernatural forces, fiery imagery, motorcycles and themes of vengeance, making the project potentially different in tone from many of Marvel’s more familiar superhero adventures.

The new Ghost Rider movie is being developed as a theatrical feature rather than a streaming project. Shawn Levy is attached to direct the film, while Jonathan Tropper, known for his work on Star Wars: Starfighter, is writing the screenplay. Their involvement adds another layer of interest to the production, particularly because Levy has experience handling large-scale commercial filmmaking while also working with character-driven stories and major franchises.

Marvel’s decision to give Ghost Rider a prominent theatrical date also places the film within an unusually busy year for the studio. According to the current release schedule, an untitled X-Men film is expected to open on May 5, 2028, followed by Ghost Rider on July 28. Black Panther 3 is then scheduled for December 15. That means audiences could potentially see three major Marvel releases in cinemas during the same calendar year.

The packed schedule reflects the scale of Marvel’s plans for its next phase of storytelling. The studio has continued to build a wider superhero universe that can accommodate different styles and genres, and Ghost Rider could give that universe a distinctly supernatural edge. While many details about the plot remain under wraps, the character’s comic book history provides plenty of possibilities for a story involving dark forces, supernatural conflicts and moral questions surrounding vengeance.

Gosling’s casting is perhaps the most talked-about aspect of the project. The actor is best known for a wide range of performances that have moved between drama, comedy, action and blockbuster entertainment. His role as Ken in Barbie demonstrated his ability to embrace a highly recognizable character, while films such as Drive and The Fall Guy have showcased his screen presence in action-oriented roles. Taking on Ghost Rider would represent another major transformation for the actor.

Gosling is also stepping into a role that already has a connection with Hollywood history. Nicolas Cage previously portrayed Ghost Rider in two Sony films, Ghost Rider and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Those movies offered audiences an earlier live-action interpretation of the character and helped establish the flaming-skull superhero as one of Marvel’s most visually distinctive figures on the big screen.

Gosling’s version is therefore likely to attract comparisons with Cage’s portrayal, although the new film is being developed in a different Marvel landscape. The character now has the opportunity to be introduced to a new generation while potentially becoming part of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whether the film directly connects to other established characters or develops Ghost Rider independently remains one of the major unanswered questions surrounding the project.

The confirmation of Gosling’s involvement was made at Comic-Con in July, where the announcement generated attention among fans. Casting a major star in such a recognizable role is significant for Marvel because Ghost Rider is a character with a strong visual identity but also plenty of room for reinterpretation. The challenge will be balancing the character’s darker origins with the expectations that come with a major Marvel theatrical release.

The July 28, 2028 date also gives the production a substantial period to develop its story, visual effects and overall creative direction. A character such as Ghost Rider would naturally require extensive visual work, particularly because the supernatural elements and signature flaming motorcycle are central to the character’s identity. A theatrical production can also give the filmmakers the opportunity to build a large-scale cinematic world around those elements.

Marvel and Disney have been making several changes to their long-term theatrical calendar, and the Ghost Rider announcement comes alongside a series of other release-date updates. The companies have revealed plans for several Marvel, Disney and Pixar projects extending well beyond 2028, demonstrating how far in advance major studio franchises are now being scheduled.

Among the other Disney projects receiving dates is Pixar’s Ghost Market, which is scheduled for March 10, 2028. The animated film is inspired by Asian mythology and explores a world involving shops where the living and the dead interact. The concept gives Pixar another opportunity to explore a culturally inspired fantasy setting while maintaining its tradition of emotionally driven animated storytelling.
