Justin Chatwin has spoken publicly about his experience working with Hayden Panettiere, remembering the actress as a warm and deeply genuine person whose struggles were visible beneath her professional confidence. Following Panettiere’s reported passing on August 16, 2026, Chatwin reflected on their final project together and the personal conversations they shared while working on a film that explored the difficult subject of domestic abuse.
Chatwin, known for his roles in projects including Shameless, War of the Worlds and The Invisible, had a connection with Panettiere that stretched back several years. The two first crossed paths during the period when Panettiere was working on Heroes. Their professional relationship continued later when they appeared together in Sleepwalker, which was released earlier this year. Their reunion gave Chatwin an opportunity to see a different side of the actress than the one he remembered from their earlier years in the entertainment industry.
Speaking about their time together, Chatwin said, “We hit it off great, and it was an awesome shoot, but it was about domestic abuse, and it was subject matter that may have hit close to home, because she did mention it. She opened up to me about a lot of things.”

The nature of their film gave the actors an opportunity to discuss emotionally difficult subjects, and Chatwin said Panettiere was unusually open with him. Their conversations went beyond the usual interactions between co-stars, allowing him to understand some of the personal challenges she had faced away from the cameras.
Chatwin also acknowledged that Panettiere appeared different to him when they worked together later in her career. Having known her earlier, he noticed a change in her demeanor and connected it with the pressures that can accompany years spent in Hollywood. He explained that his own experience with sobriety had influenced the way he viewed addiction and the entertainment industry.
“I’ve been sober for 15 years, so I know this world of addiction and Hollywood—it takes, and it takes from youth,” Chatwin said.
His comments were not simply about the demands of fame. They reflected his broader understanding of how addiction, personal struggles and the pressures of public life can overlap. For performers who grow up in the entertainment industry, maintaining a public image while dealing with private difficulties can create an especially complicated reality.
Chatwin said he sensed that Panettiere was struggling emotionally during their time together. Although the film itself dealt with serious material, he felt that her difficulties were not necessarily connected to the production. Instead, he believed there were deeper personal circumstances affecting her.
“I could tell she was struggling, and I was like, ‘I don’t think it’s this movie.’ There’s a handful of women that I’ve worked with that I really liked, and I really loved working with her, but I also know that she was really lonely,” he said.
The description of Panettiere as lonely adds another dimension to the public image of an actress who had spent much of her life in the spotlight. From a young age, she became familiar with the demands of television and film, eventually becoming widely recognized for roles that established her as a prominent young performer.
For Chatwin, however, Panettiere was not simply another successful actress. He remembered her for the way she behaved when she was able to move beyond the expectations of performing. He said that while actors are trained to remain focused and professional on set, Panettiere had a way of allowing her genuine personality to emerge during their conversations.
“I’m sure that everyone else is going to say, ‘Oh, she’s amazing.’ She’s such a sweet person on set, because she was, but we’re trained to be actors, so we’re acting on set, you know? And she is sweet. She had a beautiful heart. But we’re trained to be on, and I really liked spending time with her because she took that off, and she was authentic with me about her life, and she opened up about her struggles with addiction. And who knows where it comes from? Does it come from Hollywood? Does it come from home? And a lot of times, it’s both.”
That memory appears to be one of the strongest impressions Chatwin carried from their final collaboration. Rather than focusing solely on Panettiere’s celebrity status or career achievements, he emphasized the personal connection they developed. His recollection presents an actress who could step away from the polished public persona associated with Hollywood and speak openly about the difficulties she had experienced.
Panettiere had spent decades working in entertainment, becoming particularly well known for Heroes and Nashville. Her career began when she was young, and she experienced the unusual pressures that come with growing up in front of audiences. Over time, she became increasingly open about the challenges that accompanied her personal and professional life.
She stepped away from acting in 2018 after completing her work on Nashville. Her absence from the screen became part of a broader period in which she focused on her personal life and dealt with difficulties that she later discussed publicly. She eventually returned to acting, appearing in the Scream franchise in 2023 and taking on additional film roles afterward.
Her willingness to discuss personal struggles also became an important part of her later public identity. In her memoir, Panettiere wrote about experiences involving depression, addiction and postpartum difficulties following the birth of her daughter, Kaya. She also spoke about her sexuality and described having reasons to remain hopeful about the future.
