Actress Hayden Panettiere, who was a familiar face on TV for Heroes and Nashville, died at age 36. Her passing has left many colleagues, friends and entertainers in awe of her for her work on screen and her honesty of how she spoke about some of her most difficult times. Early success led Panettiere’s career, followed by the personal challenges and determination to rebuild her life and get back into acting.
Panettiere was reportedly found unconscious in an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina, about 2 p.m. Sunday. The police were called and her death was ruled a homicide. She was taken to hospital for medical care but was pronounced dead on arrival. The cause of her death has not been determined and authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
Police also said they didn’t see any foul play or suspicious circumstances at the time. A friend of Panettiere made the emergency call, reports said. The facts about an overdose or cardiac arrest have not been substantiated as the official cause of death, although there were reports that officials discussed the possibility of an overdose and cardiac arrest in dispatch communications. According to the autopsy, there was no sign of trauma, which means investigators are continuing to investigate the circumstances of her death.

For those personally and professionally acquainted with Panettiere, the news is especially sad. Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed her death and said that she was an actress who had touched people around her and millions of people who had seen her perform.
Her father, Skip Panettiere, told ABC in a statement that “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear Hayden”. “She was truly a light, a force of nature who infused everyone who knew her — and millions of viewers — with love and joy.”
Panettiere entered the entertainment industry at an early age and slowly made a name for herself. Her big break came with the science fiction drama, Heroes, where she starred as cheerleader Claire Bennet. The role made her a known name worldwide and helped to establish her as one of the big young actresses of her time. She also found another big break in Nashville, playing the role of a country music star whose professional aspirations clashed with personal issues, as the central theme of the series.
There were also some personal problems in her career. Panettiere had shared her story of using alcohol and drugs and her postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter in the public eye. Her openness about the experiences led to a lot of attention on the pressures of fame, motherhood and mental health. After taking a hiatus from acting for a few years, she returned to the screen, making her last appearance in 2023’s Scream VI.
This Is Me: A Reckoning is Panettiere’s memoir, which was released earlier this year. The book provided an honest look at her childhood in Hollywood, and her struggles with addiction and other personal issues. Her reappearance in the public eye for many was more than a comeback. It was also an effort to tell her piece, her own words, in a way that’s sincere and authentic after years of intense public scrutiny.
Though her death has caused a renewed focus on that complex journey. As a celebrity child, Panettiere’s life in the spotlight demonstrated the pros and cons of having a big break at a young age. She got her big break into the entertainment world at an early age and was soon an internationally-known star despite the personal tribulations that she faced. Her tale also highlighted the challenges of separating a celebrity from what lies behind the persona.
News of her death prompted tributes to follow across social media. Others who recalled her were actors Connie Britton, Viola Davis, Melissa Barrera and Kim Cattrall, television personalities and others who had worked with or spoken to her.
In an emotional message, Connie Britton, who was a former partner of Panettiere as they worked together on Nashville, said she misses her former co-star. “Bursting with brilliance, shining so bright. I can’t say anything about this sad song, Only heartbreak. I love you girl, Sleep easy now.
Viola Davis also paid a very personal homage to Panettiere. “Just what an amazing talent you were, so gifted….Julius and I loved working with you…an old, wise soul with such a deep heart, I wish the world had more time with you, because I had a burning curiosity about who you were becoming. I saw this beautiful Phoenix rising from the ashes. Your tests became your testimony, and your testimony became your legacy. You will be remembered. Rest well, Hayden. Sending healing prayers to your family, your daughter, and all who loved you. May they always speak your name….”
Kim Cattrall also had a brief message of remembrance, which read: “Rest in peace sweet Hayden. Gone far too soon.”
Writer/producer Bryan Fuller spoke about Panettiere’s impact on him as more than a cast member. Hayden was more than an actress, she was a muse. She was wise beyond her years and had already had so much of a life when she was still here and yet she left a mark on me as a writer and a storyteller that I can’t forget. Incredibly sad news.
Bethany Joy Lenz was amazed at the quick turnaround and recalled the changes she had observed with Panettiere’s life. Well, I don’t know how this is possible, but all seemed to be going around in circles. She was coming BACK to life, wasn’t she? It’s too young and there is so much more life to come, and her daughter… Hayden, you are surrounded by love. I’m sorry that I didn’t reach out or check in for every moment. This can’t be real.”
