As Alec Baldwin’s trial begins, a jury of 12 has been selected to determine his responsibility in the tragic shooting on the set of “Rust.” The incident resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injury to director Joel Souza.
In Santa Fe, Baldwin arrived at the courthouse accompanied by his wife Hilaria and brother Stephen. The trial marks a significant moment nearly three years after the fatal event during a rehearsal. Baldwin, 66, maintains that he did not pull the trigger and was unaware the firearm contained a live round, insisting the discharge was accidental.
The actor faces a felony charge of involuntary manslaughter from the October 2021 incident, with a potential sentence of up to 18 months in prison if convicted. During a recent pre-trial hearing, the judge ruled that Baldwin’s role as a co-producer is not pertinent to the case.
Jury selection has commenced in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and opening statements are anticipated to start on Wednesday. This high-profile trial follows the conviction of the movie’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, for involuntary manslaughter in April, resulting in an 18-month prison sentence.
