The Bible tells us a fascinating story about a woman named Hagar, who was a servant of Sarah, the wife of Abraham. In the Bible, Hagar is sent away by Sarah twice, once when she was pregnant with Abraham’s son, Ishmael. During her first journey into the wilderness, Hagar encounters an angel of the Lord who asks her a simple yet profound question: “Where have you come from and where are you going?” (Genesis 16:8).
In response, Hagar becomes the only character in the Bible to name God: El Roi, “the God who sees me” (Genesis 16:13). Fast forward to our story in Genesis 21, and Hagar is sent away a second time to die in the wilderness, this time with her young child, Ishmael. But once again, God intervenes and saves them both.
Hagar’s story is an incredible example of faith and resilience in the face of adversity. Her experience of God’s protection and provision leads her to give God a name: El Roi, “the God who sees me”. This name is a reminder that God is always with us, even in the darkest moments of our lives.
Hagar’s story is an inspiring reminder that God is always with us, even in the most difficult of times. He is the God who sees us, and who will never leave us nor forsake us. Hagar’s story of faith and resilience is a powerful reminder that God is always there, even when we feel like we are alone.
