In a big technology event held in Shanghai, China, the company Huawei showed a new machine that might be one of the strongest in the world for Artificial Intelligence, or AI. This machine, called the CloudMatrix 384, could even be better than the top product made by the famous U.S. company, Nvidia. Many people are now watching this closely because Huawei’s machine might change how China builds and uses AI in the future.
The CloudMatrix 384 was shown for the first time at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC). This event is a place where companies from around the world come to show their latest ideas and inventions in AI. When Huawei brought its new system, it quickly became one of the most popular booths at the event. Many visitors gathered around, eager to see what this new technology could do.
This new system has caught the attention of many experts ever since Huawei first mentioned it back in April. Some experts believe this machine is strong enough to compete with, or maybe even beat, Nvidia’s best product. Nvidia is a top U.S. chip-making company that leads the market in AI hardware, and its most powerful product right now is called the GB200 NVL72.
Dylan Patel, who started a company that studies computer chips called SemiAnalysis, said something interesting earlier this year. He said that Huawei’s new system might be able to go beyond Nvidia’s in some areas. “Huawei now has AI system capabilities that could beat Nvidia,” he shared in April. This is a big statement, especially since Nvidia has long been a leader in the AI space.
However, when people at the event asked Huawei workers to explain more about the system, they chose not to say anything. Also, when questions were sent to Huawei’s media team, they did not reply. So, while the machine has been shown to the public, some of the details remain a mystery.
Even though Huawei faces some big challenges, especially from the United States, they have still made progress. The U.S. government has put rules in place that make it harder for Huawei to get certain parts, like advanced chips. But despite these limits, Huawei has become a top name in China for making the special computer chips that AI machines need.
Back in May, Nvidia’s boss, Jensen Huang, spoke to Bloomberg, a news company. He said, “Huawei has been moving quite fast,” and he pointed to the CloudMatrix as proof that the Chinese company is not slowing down. This shows that even Nvidia is noticing how quickly Huawei is growing in the AI world.
So, what makes the CloudMatrix 384 so special?
According to experts at SemiAnalysis, the system uses 384 of Huawei’s newest chips, called the 910C. In comparison, Nvidia’s top system uses only 72 chips, which are called B200. Even though each of Nvidia’s chips might be more powerful on their own, Huawei makes up for it by using many more of its own chips together. This way, the machine works just as well—or even better—because of the clever way it is built.
This clever building design is what gives Huawei an edge. The system has something called a “supernode” architecture. This simply means that all the chips inside the machine are connected in a way that lets them talk to each other very quickly. When chips can communicate at super high speed, the whole machine can do big AI tasks much faster and more smoothly.
In June, Huawei’s cloud business boss, Zhang Pingan, said that the CloudMatrix 384 system is now working fully on Huawei’s own cloud platform. This means that customers can already start using it for real-world tasks, like running large AI programs or training AI models.
It’s quite amazing how far Huawei has come, especially when you remember how hard things have been for them lately. After the U.S. put limits on Huawei’s access to certain technology, many people thought the company might slow down. But instead, Huawei has used the challenge as motivation to build its own powerful systems and grow even faster.
Today, many people in China see Huawei as the best hope for building AI tools that don’t need U.S. parts or help. If the CloudMatrix 384 works as well as some experts believe, it could help China become more self-reliant in AI, which is a big goal for the country.
Some industry experts think that this system might also help Huawei take a bigger role in the global AI market, not just in China.
