GTA VI 210GB Size and Network Test Due to Volume Size

The long-awaited arrival of Grand Theft Auto VI is shaping up to be more than a landmark moment for gaming. It could also become a significant test of the United Kingdom’s broadband infrastructure, with early estimates suggesting that the game may require around 210GB of storage on PlayStation 5 and potentially up to 240GB on Xbox Series X|S. While these figures remain estimates rather than officially confirmed final download sizes, they highlight the growing demands of modern blockbuster games and the vast amounts of data required to deliver increasingly detailed virtual worlds to players.

The size of the download could present a considerable challenge for gamers without high-speed internet connections. Under ideal conditions, downloading 210GB over a 100Mbps connection could take close to five hours, while a 1Gbps connection might complete the transfer in approximately 28 minutes. Actual download times will depend on network conditions, platform servers and other factors. To help distribute demand, Rockstar is expected to open digital preloading on 12 November, a week before the game’s scheduled release on 19 November. This advance window should allow players to download the game ahead of launch, helping reduce the concentration of traffic on release day.

For broadband providers, however, the challenge extends beyond the sheer volume of data involved. A major release can create concentrated bursts of traffic as thousands of users download the same content simultaneously. Providers commonly rely on content delivery networks (CDNs), which store popular data closer to users and help reduce pressure on wider networks. The effectiveness of these systems can vary between providers, potentially leading to different experiences for players even when their advertised broadband speeds appear similar. Although substantial downloads do not automatically mean widespread network disruption, the launch could expose differences in how effectively providers manage sudden spikes in demand.
