Inde Navarrette to Lead Sci-Fi Thriller The Waffle House Index Following Obsession Breakthrough

Inde Navarrette, who has recently gained attention for her performance in the horror hit Obsession, is set to take on another major project with The Waffle House Index, an unusual sci-fi thriller that combines disaster, suspense, dark humor and extraterrestrial elements. The film has been picked up by Apple Original Films and is expected to add another significant credit to Navarrette’s rapidly expanding career.

The project arrives at an important moment for Navarrette, who is steadily moving into larger and more ambitious productions. After making an impression with Obsession, the young actor has now secured roles that place her alongside some of the biggest names and studios in Hollywood. Her upcoming appearance as Rogue in Marvel Studios’ X-Men project has already generated considerable interest, and The Waffle House Index gives her another opportunity to take on a distinctive character in a genre that promises plenty of unexpected turns.

The sci-fi thriller will be directed by Louis Paxton, with Andrew Nunnelly writing the screenplay. Nunnelly’s script previously attracted attention after being selected for the 2025 Black List, a respected annual list that highlights promising unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. The involvement of a screenplay recognized through the Black List has added to the curiosity surrounding the film, particularly because of its unusual premise and increasingly chaotic storyline.

Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B Entertainment is attached to produce the project, bringing an established Hollywood production banner into the mix. Navarrette will also serve as an executive producer, giving her a role behind the camera as well as in front of it. For a young performer building momentum in the industry, the opportunity to become involved creatively in a project at this stage of her career could prove particularly valuable.

The story of The Waffle House Index begins with an ordinary setting that quickly becomes anything but ordinary. The central character is a Waffle House waitress working the night shift when a dangerous stranger carrying a gun enters the restaurant. What initially appears to be a threatening situation soon expands into a much larger fight for survival as a series of extraordinary events begins unfolding around the restaurant.

The film’s storyline reportedly moves through a wildly imaginative collection of disasters and science-fiction elements. A massive flood, deadly crocodiles, a nuclear explosion, aliens and a mysterious magical bunker hidden beneath the Waffle House all become part of the waitress’s increasingly bizarre night. The combination makes the project stand apart from conventional disaster thrillers, where the focus is usually placed on a single catastrophe. Here, the story appears designed to keep escalating, with each development raising the stakes even further.

The title The Waffle House Index has a real-world connection that makes the concept even more intriguing. The phrase is commonly used as an informal way of judging the seriousness of a hurricane or major storm by looking at whether Waffle House restaurants in affected areas remain operational. Because the restaurant chain is known for continuing to serve customers during severe weather, its operating status can offer a quick indication of how badly a particular area has been affected.

The informal system generally uses three levels. A green status means a restaurant is operating normally, suggesting that conditions remain manageable. Yellow indicates limited service and points to more serious disruption. Red means the restaurant has been forced to close, which can signal extremely severe conditions and significant danger in the surrounding area. Although it is not an official scientific measurement, the concept has become familiar in discussions about extreme weather and disaster preparedness.

Turning that real-world idea into the foundation for a science-fiction thriller gives the film an unusual starting point. A familiar restaurant associated with late-night meals and severe-weather resilience becomes the setting for a story involving events far beyond anything normally expected from a storm. That contrast between an everyday American location and increasingly extraordinary threats could provide the film with much of its distinctive character.

For Navarrette, the project follows a period of growing visibility. Her performance in Obsession helped introduce her to a much wider audience, with the horror drama becoming a major commercial and pop-culture success. The film, made by filmmaker Curry Barker, reportedly earned more than USD 505 million worldwide and became a significant talking point among audiences.

That success has helped place Navarrette among the younger performers attracting increasing attention from major Hollywood productions. Her previous work also includes an appearance in the widely watched series 13 Reasons Why, as well as a role in The CW’s Superman & Lois. These projects have allowed her to work across television and film while building experience in very different types of stories.

Her upcoming portrayal of Rogue in Marvel Studios’ X-Men is likely to represent another major step in her career. Rogue is one of Marvel’s best-known characters, giving Navarrette the opportunity to become part of one of the most recognizable superhero franchises in popular entertainment. The addition of The Waffle House Index suggests that she is not limiting herself to one type of role or genre as her profile continues to grow.
