Huawei Looks to Expand AI Partnerships With Pharmaceutical Companies

Huawei is planning to deepen its collaboration with Chinese pharmaceutical companies as it looks to expand the role of artificial intelligence across drug development, clinical practice and healthcare implementation. The technology giant is increasingly focusing on healthcare applications for AI, reflecting the wider shift within the pharmaceutical industry toward advanced computing, modelling systems and automation.

The company’s plans come as pharmaceutical firms around the world increase their investment in artificial intelligence to make drug research more efficient and potentially reduce the time and cost involved in developing new treatments. AI is being used across several stages of the pharmaceutical process, including analysing biological data, identifying potential drug candidates, modelling how compounds may behave and supporting researchers as they evaluate large volumes of information.

For Huawei, the growing interest in AI-driven healthcare represents an opportunity to build a stronger presence in an industry that is becoming increasingly dependent on technology. The company already has experience working with healthcare institutions and pharmaceutical businesses in China, and it now appears to be looking at ways to extend those relationships into broader areas of drug development and clinical use.

“As we further deepen our research into AI in the medical field, ⁠we’ll have more collaboration and results emerging with pharmaceutical companies from drug manufacturing to clinical to final implementation,” William Zhang, president of Huawei’s healthcare business unit, told Reuters on Wednesday.

Zhang said Huawei already has collaborations involving clinical practice in hospitals and is examining additional opportunities in the healthcare sector. He did not provide specific details about the projects under consideration, but said the company’s current pharmaceutical partnerships are mainly with domestic drugmakers.

The comments point to a broader strategy in which Huawei is seeking to move beyond the traditional role of a technology supplier and become more closely involved in the development and application of AI-based healthcare systems. The pharmaceutical industry offers a particularly important area for this expansion because drug research generates enormous amounts of complex data, creating opportunities for AI systems to assist scientists and healthcare professionals.

Drug discovery is traditionally a lengthy and expensive process. Researchers must identify promising compounds, understand their biological effects, test their safety and effectiveness, and eventually move suitable candidates through clinical development. Many potential treatments fail along the way. AI cannot eliminate those scientific uncertainties, but advanced computational tools can help researchers process information more quickly and identify patterns that might otherwise take considerable time to uncover.

The growing use of AI has therefore attracted major technology companies, which see healthcare and pharmaceuticals as significant areas for future growth. Huawei is entering this increasingly competitive field at a time when other major technology companies are also establishing relationships with pharmaceutical manufacturers. U.S. chipmaker Nvidia, for example, has developed AI-related partnerships with major drug companies including Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk. Such collaborations demonstrate how the boundaries between the technology and pharmaceutical industries are becoming less distinct.

The attraction is understandable. Pharmaceutical companies have a strong incentive to improve research productivity, particularly when the development of a new medicine can take many years and involve substantial investment. If AI tools can help researchers narrow down potential candidates earlier, improve the design of experiments or support more efficient analysis, they could have a meaningful impact on the development process.

However, the growing role of AI in medicine also comes with limitations. Pharmaceutical research involves biological systems that can be extremely difficult to predict, and computational models are only as reliable as the data and scientific assumptions behind them. A promising result generated by an AI system still needs to be evaluated through laboratory research and clinical testing before it can support decisions about patient care.

Clinical implementation creates another layer of complexity. AI systems used in hospitals may influence how doctors interpret information, identify risks or make treatment decisions, meaning accuracy and reliability are particularly important. Healthcare organisations must also consider issues such as patient privacy, data security, regulatory oversight and the ability of medical professionals to understand how an AI system reached its recommendations.

Huawei’s interest in clinical practice suggests that the company is looking beyond research laboratories. Its healthcare business could potentially connect AI technology with hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and other parts of the medical system. That would give the company an opportunity to develop technology that is designed not only for theoretical research but also for practical use in healthcare environments.

The company’s focus on domestic pharmaceutical companies also reflects the importance of China’s growing healthcare and technology sectors. Chinese drugmakers are investing in research and development while the country continues to build its capabilities in artificial intelligence.
