The much-anticipated Gavin and Stacey Christmas special, widely believed to be the series finale, promises an entertaining dive into Nessa’s “unbelievable chequered life.” Co-creators James Corden and Ruth Jones collaborated to shed light on Vanessa Shanessa “Nessa” Jenkins’ vibrant and chaotic past, delivering a fitting send-off for the iconic character.

Scheduled to air on Christmas Day, the episode picks up five years after the cliffhanger from the 2019 special, which saw Nessa propose to Smithy (played by Corden). Reflecting on the new special, Corden shared, “Ruth brought her best to this character, and her acting is phenomenal. This episode explores Nessa’s unbelievable adventures—her colorful past and a few surprises we wrote in for fans to enjoy.”

Nessa’s escapades, including her romantic entanglements with Richard Madeley and Nigel Havers, have been hinted at throughout the series. This time, viewers will finally delve into the full scope of her wild ventures and larger-than-life experiences.

The 2019 Christmas special captivated over 18 million viewers and earned the prestigious Impact Award at the 2020 National Television Awards. Speaking about the final season, Jones expressed the emotional connection she shares with Corden, saying, “Gavin and Stacey has been a huge part of our lives. Filming that last scene, just James and I, under the night sky, was incredibly moving. When my character said, ‘I loved you with all my heart,’ it felt deeply personal—it was as much about us as friends as it was about the show.”

The writing duo even revisited a nostalgic location where much of the series was originally conceived. Corden quipped, “The hotel hadn’t aged well—it’s definitely under new management now.” Jones humorously added, “Our writing sessions are a mix of chatting, chocolate, and naps. Somehow, amidst the chaos, the work gets done.”

The Christmas special also teases new developments in the lives of Gavin and Stacey, who are now seeking ways to rekindle their 17-year marriage, while Nessa embarks on an intriguing business venture. Corden highlighted the relatability of their characters, saying, “You rarely see people like Ruth and me fall in love on TV. That’s what makes the show so wonderfully messy and real.”

As for the possibility of a spin-off, the creators are leaving the door open but are unsure of what the future holds. “This feels like the perfect ending,” Corden reflected. “But if we didn’t at least try to brainstorm more ideas, I’d regret it.”

The final chapter of Gavin and Stacey premieres on BBC One at 9 p.m. on Christmas Day, with the accompanying documentary Gavin and Stacey: A Fond Farewell airing on New Year’s Day at 7 p.m. Both will also be available on BBC iPlayer. Fans can expect an unforgettable send-off to one of Britain’s most beloved sitcoms.
