Strictly Come Dancing pro dancer Amy Dowden has been rushed to hospital after collapsing backstage at the live show on Saturday night.
Dowden returned to the BBC One talent show this year following a season off while undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
Her representative was also quoted by BBC News saying, “Amy was feeling unwell, so an ambulance was called as a precaution. She is feeling much better now and wishes to thank the Strictly family for their love and concern.” She also requested that her health matters be kept private.
The 34-year-old dancer from Wales was taken to a hospital after an ambulance was summoned to Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, where the show was being filmed. “We were called just after 21:00 BST on Saturday to attend a medical emergency at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood. An ambulance was sent to the scene and one adult female patient was transported to Barnet Hospital for further care.”
Dowden missed Sunday’s results show due to the incident. Her dance partner, JB Gill of JLS fame, took to his Instagram account to thank their supporters. “I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone for voting for us and wishing us well,” he said. “We absolutely loved our performance on Saturday night, and we are grateful for being through to another week. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your support.”
Last year, Dowden shared a serious health scare she faced during her cancer treatment. She almost died from sepsis, a complication she said she was “very unlucky” to contract.
Dowden recalled how two days after her chemotherapy session on August 3rd, she went for a walk with her parents, Gillian and Richard. “The Strictly producers were checking in on me, and I was sending videos of me on my walk. I couldn’t believe how good I was feeling,” she said.
However, within hours, Amy’s condition had accelerated dramatically, and her parents had to take her on an ambulance to the hospital. She described it in a magazine, saying “Amy’s symptoms worsened very, very quickly. At one moment, she felt all right, and then all of a sudden, she was very ill—it was over in an instant.”.
She added, “Amy attempted standing but just kind of fell back onto the settee.”
Paramedics took Dowden to the hospital, where a high fever put her in the intensive care unit. There, she was diagnosed with sepsis-an infection that’s potentially deadly when it’s acute, dangerous in itself for people on chemotherapy or for anyone else whose immune systems are not working well at the time.
Apart from health problems, she also suffers from Crohn’s disease, which is the condition described by chronic inflammatory conditions. It sometimes creates additional problems with one’s general condition. With that, she would not want to retire without holding onto her love up until the end.
