Tim Blake Nelson is practically bursting with excitement about his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World. Nelson, who first donned the role of Dr. Samuel Sterns in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, steps back into the shoes of The Leader-a character whose becoming a major villain was teased in the original film.
The return of Nelson was teased since Marvel Studios made the announcement at the 2022 D23 Expo, and while a number of fans have been curious to see how The Leader will fit into Captain America 4, details about his role are still under wraps. For Nelson’s part, he’s understandably stoked about the opportunity, proclaiming his deep gratitude for the chance to rejoin the MCU.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Nelson spoke to the honor of being invited back by Marvel’s key figures-which include Kevin Feige, Nate Moore, and Kyana F. Davidson: “Being brought back into the MCU to play a villain alongside Giancarlo Esposito and going up against Anthony Mackie has been a tremendous honor,” he said. He shared how, although he was heartbroken when it looked like it would take such a long time since his last appearance, now he can think about the delay as a blessing in disguise. “It’s been a really interesting adventure. I was heartbroken when it seemed I wasn’t going to come back as The Leader, but now I’m glad it took 16 years because it’s made the character more interesting,” he said.
Fans and critics welcomed Nelson’s return with open arms, since the character this time around had much more depth in the story and plot development. Remembering his character’s depth and the effect of personal growth that his character had undergone in the past two decades, Nelson said, “I’m glad it took this long because the character I play demands my own life experience over the past 18 years.”. There’s some real depth and some real rage, some real pathos to this guy, and I needed 18 more years of life experience to try and pull that off.”
Not only does the new Captain America: Brave New World resurrect The Leader, but it also brings back some of the other characters from The Incredible Hulk. Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross and his daughter Betty Ross will feature in the film, with Harrison Ford taking up the mantle of Ross after the death of William Hurt while Liv Tyler returns to the role of Betty Ross.
Anthony Mackie stars as Sam Wilson/Captain America in this film-which marks his first-ever leading MCU performance. The film also co-stars Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres/Falcon, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Shira Haas as Ruth Bat-Seraph/Sabra, and Giancarlo Esposito as Seth Voelker/Sidewinder.
Captain America: Brave New World will strike theaters on February 14, 2025, and is set to be among the major entries of Phase 5 in the MCU-very highly anticipated and a further additive to Marvel’s growing universe.
