Emma Roberts may be gearing up to portray pop star Britney Spears in one potential career-defining performance.
Since the memoir of Britney Spears, The Woman In Me, was published, rumors have been so rife with who might play the Princess of Pop in said biopic. The tell-all memoir from Britney immediately reached New York Times bestseller status, and studios went nuts in a very heated bidding war. Deadline reported that Universal emerged as the winner for the rights, with Wicked director Jon M. Chu attached to develop and helm it.
This memoir charts the rise, fall, and triumphal return of Britney. Deeply personal, the book covers her childhood spent in Mississippi and Louisiana; her 1999 explosive debut album,.Baby One More Time, and the tumultuous personal struggles that followed, including a very public conservatorship battle.
Though Britney herself hasn’t yet hinted at who she’d like to see play her onscreen, her inner circle has started tossing out potential names. Among them? Emma Roberts. Okay, so the suggestion was made by no other than Britney’s former long-time assistant, Felicia Culotta. Felicia sat down for an interview with TMZ, stating that Emma’s early time in the spotlight on Nickelodeon’s Unfabulous echoed Britney’s own time as a young star on Disney’s The Mickey Mouse Club.
The latter rumors have apparently reached Emma, and she seems indifferent to the competition whatsoever. In fact, this August 29, in an interview with Cosmopolitan, she just expressed enthusiasm: “I love her assistant. I mean, it’s my true dream to play Britney Spears.”
Emma is pretty excited to play the part. She remembered just how much she liked Britney’s songs, even going to the utterly personal memory: “It’s a rumor, but I hope maybe it will come true. I remember locking myself in my room and listening to In the Zone on repeat. I told myself, ‘I cannot leave this room until I memorize every word.'”
But her love for Britney doesn’t stop there. Emma even serenades her three-year-old son Rhodes during bath time with Britney’s hits. “I sing Britney to my son in the bath all of the time,” she spilled. “I’m always like, ‘God, he must think I’m so weird.’ That’s some millennial parenting.”
Though still a rumor, the possibility of Emma playing Britney Spears has caused quite a stir. Other names thrown into the mix of casting ideas were by Britney’s former assistant, including Timothée Chalamet as Britney’s ex, Justin Timberlake.
As the project takes shape, a hungry combination of both Britney and Emma fans awaits fidgeting on any news. Whether Emma Roberts will play the part is anyone’s guess, but one thing is for sure: she has definitely expressed her enthusiasm for the role.
