Mason Greenwood Arrives in France for Marseille Transfer as Joey Barton Defends Move

Mason Greenwood has arrived in France, preparing for a medical with Marseille. The club has agreed to sign him from Manchester United for £27 million, with an additional £3.2 million in potential add-ons. Greenwood was met by enthusiastic fans at the airport, complete with flares and chants of his name.

Joey Barton has voiced support for Greenwood’s transfer, despite some fans expressing anger over the signing. Barton believes Greenwood could have been the difference for England in Euro 2024, potentially leading them to victory.

Greenwood, now 22, faced serious charges in 2022, including attempted rape, assault, and controlling behavior. These charges were dropped in early 2023 after key witnesses withdrew, and Greenwood has maintained his innocence throughout.

Despite backlash from some Marseille supporters, who launched a #GreenwoodNotWelcome campaign, Barton insists that Greenwood deserves a chance to move forward with his career. Barton, who played for Marseille in the 2012-13 season, remains a strong advocate for the young forward.

Last season, Greenwood was on loan at Getafe in La Liga, where he scored 10 goals. Barton took to social media, writing, “This kid deserves a chance to get on with his career. We all make mistakes. Nobody’s perfect. England would have won the Euros with this kid in the side.”
