Kasabian’s journey took a significant turn with the departure of former frontman Tom Meighan, and their latest album, Happenings, is a testament to their adaptability and evolution. Serge Pizzorno, who has taken on vocal duties, has meticulously pared down the songwriting process. The result is a collection of tracks that are short, punchy, and direct, with most songs clocking in at under three minutes. This newfound brevity brings a refreshing immediacy to Kasabian’s music, allowing their signature stadium indie rock sound to shine through more clearly. The massive choruses, a hallmark of their style, are ever-present and more impactful than ever.
The album opens with “Darkest Lullaby” and “Call,” both of which set a strong precedent with their memorable hooks and energy. These tracks exemplify the band’s ability to create powerful, concise music that still retains the grandiosity of their previous work. “Passengers,” for instance, starts off with a vibe reminiscent of a Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute, showcasing a funkier, more rhythmic approach. Elsewhere, there are nods to the sounds of Foals and early Arctic Monkeys, indicating a willingness to experiment and draw inspiration from their peers. This variety, while sometimes highlighting the band’s struggle to find a unified direction, also speaks to their versatility and willingness to explore new musical territories.
Despite the challenges of realignment, Happenings demonstrates Kasabian’s resilience and adaptability. The album’s tighter structure and focused songwriting indicate a band that is willing to evolve and refine their sound. While it may not yet represent a fully realized new direction, it offers a promising glimpse into what the future might hold for Kasabian.
