In 1982, Bhanu Athaiya won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for the movie Gandhi. She was the first Indian to win an Oscar. Her work in the movie was praised by the critics and she was lauded for her intricate designs.

Bhanu Athaiya’s career spanned over five decades and she worked on several movies in the Indian film industry. She was the costume designer for movies like Lagaan, Dil Se, and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. She also worked on international projects like The Deceivers and The Guru.

Bhanu Athaiya was a recipient of several awards, including the Padma Shri in 1992. She was also honored with the National Film Award for Best Costume Design for the movie Lagaan in 2002.
