Ariana Grande is known for her bold fashion choices and daring tattoos. But her latest ink has sparked a bit of controversy. The star said she had the phrase “7 rings” tattooed in Kanji, a Japanese style of writing. But it actually spells “BBQ Grill,” as some of Grande’s Japanese fans quickly pointed out.

The singer posted a photo of her new tattoo on Instagram, writing, “7 Rings in Japanese Kanji. It hurt like f**k n still looks tight. I wouldn’t have lasted one more symbol lmao. But this spot also peels a ton and won’t last so if I miss it enough I’ll suffer thru the whole thing next time.”
But some of her Japanese fans were quick to point out that the tattoo was not quite right. The kanji characters she chose, 七輪, mean “shichirin” in Japanese, which is a small charcoal grill.
The tattoo artist, Kane Navasard, also took to Instagram to explain the mistake. He wrote, “I wouldn’t usually comment on a tattoo but this is a special case. Ariana came in and wanted the kanji for 7 rings. After drawing it out several times and explaining the meaning is ‘BBQ Grill’, we all had a laugh about it.”
Navasard also noted that Grande was aware of the mistake and decided to keep the tattoo anyway. He wrote, “She thought it was funny and decided to keep it.”
Grande herself has yet to comment on the mistake, but she did post a video of herself showing off the tattoo. She captioned the video, “Slightly better quality lol. RIP tiny charcoal grill. Miss u man. I actually really like it.”
The singer has since removed the post, but the tattoo remains. It seems that Grande is embracing the mistake and has no plans to get it corrected.
