Fermín Romero

Fermín Romero is a Mexican international relations specialist, space policy advisor, author, and broadcaster whose work focuses on space law and policy, space security, international telecommunications regulation, and strategic foresight. He serves as President of the Acercándote al Universo (FAU) Foundation and is the creator, director, and host of Café Espacial, an award-winning space affairs series that received the 2021 National Broadcasting Award from the National Association of Broadcasters of Mexico. Romero is also Executive Director of CI Consultoría Internacional and Director of the Mexican National Contact Point for the Latin American and Caribbean Space Network (ReLaCa-Espacio). His leadership roles include President of the Space Development Commission of the Doctoral Faculty of Global Leaders of the Global Federation of Leadership and High Intelligence, membership on the Board of Directors of the Mexican Society of Aerospace Science and Technology (SOMECYTA), and advisory positions with several international organisations dedicated to aerospace, space law, and innovation.

Romero has held senior positions within Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he led initiatives related to space affairs, information and communication technologies, telecommunications, international security, and multilateral diplomacy. He played a key role in promoting the establishment of the Mexican Space Agency (AEM), later serving on its Governing Board and as an external consultant. An author, lecturer, and columnist, he contributed the chapter on Mexico to Space Regulation in Latin America (Springer Nature) and writes the long-running Café Espacial column on aerospace developments. His contributions to the space sector and public service have earned numerous distinctions, including the 2025 Patria Award for Exemplary Mexicans, the 2023 Mexicanos de 100 recognition, and honorary doctorates in STEM Education and in Creativity, Humanity, and International Culture. Romero holds a degree in International Relations from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), along with postgraduate diplomas from Tecnológico de Monterrey and the Matías Romero Institute, and specialised training in international security from the Defence Academy of Cranfield University in the United Kingdom.
