Nicole Kidman’s Intense Method Acting During ‘Practical Magic’ Filming Led to Burst Blood Vessels, Reveals Producer

The making of the 1998 supernatural romance “Practical Magic” continues to yield fascinating behind-the-scenes stories nearly three decades later, with producer Denise Di Novi recently sharing remarkable details about Nicole Kidman‘s extraordinary commitment to her role. During one particularly demanding sequence, Kidman’s dedication to authenticity pushed her so far that she physically burst blood vessels in her face while filming a pivotal scene. Di Novi opened up about the production in a recent interview, offering fresh perspective on the cult classic as Warner Bros. Home Entertainment prepares to release the film on 4K UHD for the first time on August 25.

According to Di Novi, the intensity Kidman brought to her character Gillian Owens was unparalleled throughout production, but one scene in particular tested the actor’s physical and emotional limits. The sequence involved the Owens women attempting to banish the spirit of Jimmy Angelov, portrayed by Goran Visnjic, through a powerful coven ritual. Kidman’s character becomes possessed during this confrontation, requiring a level of raw, visceral performance that pushed her to extremes. Di Novi recounted, “And she definitely throws herself into a role in every scene. It was very, very tough for her. She even kind of burst a few blood vessels in her face while she was shooting that scene. It was incredibly intense and everyone really, really threw themselves into it in a very realistic way.”

The casting process itself proved serendipitous, with Sandra Bullock already attached to the project early on, also serving as a producer. The production team immediately recognized Kidman as the ideal counterpoint to Bullock’s Sally Owens. At that time, Kidman was completing work on Stanley Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut,” a film that showcased her dramatic range in darker, more psychologically complex territory. Di Novi explained the casting rationale, saying, “At that time, Nicole Kidman was just finishing ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ and she hadn’t done anything like this. She had done mostly darker stuff and thrillers and we just felt like that would be a really exciting thing to see her do something like this.” The gamble paid off remarkably, as Kidman embraced the opportunity to explore lighter, more fantastical material while still bringing her characteristic depth and intensity to every moment.

What made “Practical Magic” particularly special, according to Di Novi, was the unprecedented pairing of two actors who would both achieve what she described as “icon status.” Bullock and Kidman brought complementary energies to their roles as witch sisters bound by both blood and a family curse that threatens every man they love. The producer reflected on this unique alignment, noting, “I think there are certain actresses that reach a level of icon status either because of the length of their career or their level of excellence. And you don’t often see two of them in equal roles in the same movie.” This observation speaks to the rarity of two performers of such caliber sharing top billing in a film that allows both to shine equally, rather than positioning one as the lead and the other as support.

The chemistry between Bullock and Kidman became immediately apparent to everyone on set, creating what Di Novi called a truly unique dynamic. She elaborated, “You have two of the greatest and not only the greatest, the most popular, two of the greatest, most beloved actors alive today, acting together and playing sisters and their chemistry is so unique.” This connection translated powerfully to the screen, helping the film transcend its initial mixed critical reception to become a beloved staple of 1990s cinema that continues to find new audiences through home video and streaming platforms.

Beyond the famous blood vessel incident, Di Novi’s recollections paint a picture of a production where actors pushed themselves to extraordinary lengths to honor the material. The coven scene, which forms the emotional climax of the film’s supernatural conflict, required the entire cast to commit fully to the ritual’s gravity and danger. While Kidman’s physical reaction was the most dramatic manifestation of this commitment, the producer emphasized that everyone involved brought their full intensity to the moment, creating a sequence that still resonates with viewers decades later.

The film’s journey from theatrical release to cultural phenomenon has been fascinating to observe. Initially dismissed by some critics as lightweight fare, “Practical Magic” has endured through repeated viewings and home video releases, accumulating a passionate fanbase that appreciates its blend of romance, supernatural elements, and grounded family drama. The impending 4K UHD release speaks to the film’s lasting appeal and its status as a visual and emotional touchstone for multiple generations of viewers.
