Once again, the Tolkien universe is continuing to grow, and this time, it is a novelty one. Anya Taylor-Joy has officially joined the list of stars that have been announced for the upcoming Warner Bros. feature, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The actress, a signature name in recent genre films including The Witch, The Queen’s Gambit and the Dune series, will also be playing a completely fresh role in the famed fantasy franchise as Seren. It has sparked enthusiasm among fans, indicating that the studio is seeking some serious talent to help connect The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Sources in the industry say that Taylor-Joy will play a Sindar Elf from the Woodland Realm. The particular type of Elves categorizes her under the rule of King Thranduil, the staunch Elvenking, who was played by Lee Pace in the Hobbit trilogy. Seren is not only part of the Woodland Realm’s court, but she is called a “trusted and lethal agent” of Thranduil, a warrior who will be an important figure in the story. It’s not a common plot to have an original character appear in a film, so the choice of casting an original character, as opposed to another one who already has a story to tell, was interesting. The Lord of the Rings franchise was officially met with a message on the official social media channels, saying, “Welcome to the hunt, Anya Taylor-Joy,” which implies that the actress is in for some danger as she becomes a part of the story.

One of the most intriguing things about this new production is its setting: The Hunt for Gollum is set during the Second World War. The movie will be set during a time that was often ignored in the original film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, officially between the two movies. The movie will be set right in the middle of The Hobbit’s story and the start of The Lord of the Rings, something that was often overlooked in the original film adaptations. This time brings a relatively calm Middle-earth slowly stirring with ominous signs. The main story is of two characters, the ranger Aragorn and the wizard Gandalf who set out on a desperate journey to find the ill-favored creature Gollum. What matters most is their motivation – they must discover the truth of what Bilbo Baggins’ mysterious ring, the One Ring, is and how much it can threaten the known world. This premise creates a more gritty, detective-like story in the fantasy setting, with a different flavor from the ‘chosen one’ themes of the previous trilogies.
Anya Taylor-Joy joins a cast that does a great job of marrying great actors from the series with new talent. Ian McKellen reprising the role of Gandalf is a huge event to maintain continuity and gravitas the wizard can lend to each of the scenes. Likewise the appearance of Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins is significant as it brings back the original trilogy and all the stakes surrounding the quest for a Ring. Lee Pace will also be reprising the role of Thranduil, which makes sense when Seren is introduced, as she works under his command. However, the reincarnation of Aragorn is especially notable, as this is Viggo Mortensen’s successor, Jamie Dornan. Dornan is playing the role of “Strider,” the ranger, and will bring his own rendition of the man’s early days of leadership and carrying the burden. In addition, the impressive line-up also features Kate Winslet as Marigol and Leo Woodall as Halvard who will be dealing with the challenges of Middle-earth alongside established characters.
The news of The Hunt for Gollum and its massive cast comes as part of the greater push to breathe new life into the franchise on film. In addition to this film, it’s been reported that a second film is also in development, with a working title of The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past. It suggests Warner Bros. wants to establish a new presence in Tolkien’s universe, capitalizing on the hike of memories related to Peter Jackson’s movies with new lines. The production is also happening at a time when the television series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which is also exploring the Second Age, continues to be a streaming hit, making the franchise pervasive in media.
This casting makes sense and exciting for those who have been watching Taylor-Joy’s career. The actress has established her reputation in big-budget, high-concept films, such as Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series. The films she has directed have a unique quality of a soft beauty and yet a strong intensity. A perfect match for a warrior Elf in Middle-earth. She did show a penchant for action scenes, which should be a big part of her film with Seren, which is described as a deadly operative.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be released in theatres on 17 December 2027. The film’s release date will go head-to-head with another behemoth film, Avengers: Secret Wars, which arrives on December 28. The temporal proximity of the release dates can be problematic for the studio, but it may also reflect the confidence industry has in the marketability of the Lord of the Rings franchise. There is one thing that still needs to be determined, though: how these original characters, especially Seren, will fit into the existing story line. As new characters are developed, they are required to fit into a world with a rich and long history and strong fan base while remaining unique and original. A key area of the film’s success will be balancing Tolkien’s canon with extending the cinematic universe.
