Seven years have passed since Daniel Day-Lewis last darkened a cinema screen as an actor, but the triple Academy Award winner is returning in a movie by his son Ronan Day-Lewis. THE BRITISH actor, hailed for his intense method acting style and some of the iconic performances in recent screen history, will headline his son Ronan Day-Lewis’s directorial debut for Blue Lotus International Productions.
Day-Lewis had entered semi-retirement, having just completed filming Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread in 2017. He has largely remained in the public eye since then. But being asked to share screen space with his son has beckoned him back.
Anemone, which is under production at Manchester, features a talented cast led by Sean Bean and includes some of the cream of its talent alongside him in the cast in the form of Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green. The movie co-written by Daniel and Ronan tells the complications of family ties with deep relationships between fathers and sons as well as brothers.
With a career in excess of four decades, Day-Lewis has produced unforgettable performances in period pieces, and these will include The Last of the Mohicans. His dedication to his craft is the stuff of legend, for which he received three Best Actor Oscars for his portrayals of Christy Brown in My Left Foot, Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood, and Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln.
In fact, Day-Lewis was knighted by the Duke of Cambridge in 2014. In the recently released Phantom Thread, just before its release, Day-Lewis surprised everyone in the industry by announcing that he was retiring as an actor.
While Day-Lewis has been absent for long stretches of years from the silver screen, in which he even worked as a shoemaker in Florence during the 1990s, nothing can replace the excitement audiences will experience seeing their champion return to the big screen. The making of this movie in which his son Ronan makes his directorial debut could, after all, be an interesting one for him alone.
As Anemone is already in the works, the audience will wait patiently to see when Daniel Day-Lewis makes a reappearance on the big screen and to savor what comes out of this father-to-son collaboration.
