Kylie Jenner, of the Kardashian-Jenner brood, has forged an empire in beauty. With Kylie Cosmetics fast becoming a staple in many households and her higher-end fashion line, Khy, gaining steam, it would seem the reality star and entrepreneur is never stuck in one place. However, this next admission left the entertainment industry abuzz: She is thinking of pursuing music.
Four years since the accidental virality of “Rise and Shine,” Kylie has hinted at possibly dipping into the music world. The moment that began with an innocently carried-out morning routine suddenly shot her into the ever-growing pool of internet sensations. Most people were introduced to a different side of Kylie, one they didn’t know—a woman who had a surprising melodic talent.
Her recent British Vogue cover story offered more clues about her musical aspirations. Asked about childhood dreams, Kylie admitted to having pop star ambitions. Sure, she’s quick to deflect with self-deprecation about her vocal prowess, but there’s a playful tone that suggests a hidden confidence. It’s as if the initial success of “Rise and Shine” ignited a spark, a whisper of possibility that’s grown louder over time.
Speaking to Vogue, Kylie confessed that she loves a bit of old-school soul and R&B. Her influences include Aretha Franklin, The Beatles, and Otis Redding. From this eclectic mix, one feels something similar that can bring old-school vibes with modern pop sensibilities, making for quite a special formula to set her apart from the crowded music scene.
Her family has attempted to make music before, and it has never gone quite as planned. Who can forget mom Kris Jenner’s ’80s anthem, “I Love My Friends”, which soon became more of a family in-joke rather than a hit maker? Kim’s momentary career into making music easily fades into memory too. But those could have given Kylie both a cautionary tale and inspiration at the same time.
The Kardashians-Jenner are definitely not scared of reinventing themselves. From reality TV to fashion and makeup, and now maybe music, they seem to prove that with will and perseverance, they can conquer anything. Add this to Kylie’s entrepreneurial spirit and huge following on social media, and she has quite an upper hand.
However, making the transition from the boardroom into a credible pop star is an act in itself. Music is an extremely competitive business, and talent alone will not suffice. For an artist to keep his or her music career going, it requires relentless effort, perseverance, and a genuine drive for the profession.
For Kylie to do music is undeniably very bold. She has a huge platform and the resources to make a difference, but whether she can deliver the music which will back the touting remains to be seen. Obviously, all eyes are on her, and the world of music is just a hold away.
