Major IT Outage Hits Australia, Disrupting Banks, Media, and Telecoms

Australia has experienced a significant IT outage disrupting banks, telecoms, media outlets, and airlines.

The National Cyber Security Coordinator reported on Friday that it was aware of a ‘large-scale technical outage affecting numerous companies and services across Australia this afternoon.’

The agency stated, “Our current information indicates this outage is due to a technical issue with a third-party software platform used by the affected companies. There is no indication that it is a cyber security incident. We continue to engage with key stakeholders.”

Sydney Airport reported that flights were still arriving and departing, but travelers should expect delays. “We have activated our contingency plans and deployed additional staff to our terminals,” it announced on X.

Melbourne Airport noted that check-in procedures for some airlines were impacted. “Passengers flying with these airlines this afternoon are advised to allow extra time for check-in. Please check with your airline for flight updates,” it posted on X.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Network Ten also confirmed their systems were affected.

Police in New South Wales announced they were aware of the outage and advised anyone facing an emergency to call 000.
