Big Russian antivirus company Kaspersky Labs is leaving the United States. The reason for this company’s going away is the US government ban on marketing antivirus software in that country.
Kaspersky Labs has been operational in the United States of America for two decades now. They are best known for their antivirus and other cybersecurity tools to protect computers from viruses and hackers. But thanks to a ruling by the US government, they are no longer allowed to sell their software here. That also means an end to providing updates for the software already installed by people living in the US.
This, the US government says, it has done because of the fear that Russia’s control over Kaspersky is probably too strong—a danger to America’s computers and services. According to one US official, Gina Raimondo, Russia might exploit its control over Kaspersky’s software to collect sensitive personal data of Americans and to conduct malicious activities against the US.
Kaspersky Labs has thrown punches back at these ideas. According to them, “We never did anything to harm the US and follow very strict rules to protect people’s information. They even promised to fight the ban using legal ways.”.
Effective from July 20, 2024, Kaspersky is going to start its wind-up operations in the US. This will entail a gradual reduction in the workforce and layoff of its employees in the country. There is already some notice on their website to the effect that you can no longer purchase their antiviral products.
This is a decision that the US government has taken based on strict regulations. These were formulated during the time when Donald Trump was president. They were put in place to avoid close collaboration between American companies and high-tech firms from countries such as Russia and China, which the US perceives to be threats to its security.
Kaspersky Labs is a large company with operations in 31 countries in the world. Many millions of people and a significant number of businesses are supported by them with antivirus software and cybersecurity solutions. They serve over 400 million users and have more than 270,000 business clients worldwide.
It is really a sad time for Kaspersky as it leaves the US. They feel there is no other choice because whatever the business, it no longer can be carried. However, they are devoted more than ever to finding new ways to help people protect computers and information.
In simple words, leaving the US by Kaspersky Labs would herald the closure of a long journey in American markets. They had tried to reassure the US government as well as customers all over the safety of their products. Still, it has also been compelled to walk out finally due to the regulatory challenges. However, this will affect to a greater extent their operations and an amount of their workforce in the U.S; void from this void will be their global presence. Kaspersky Labs will continue to innovate and serve its millions of customers all over the world, changing its tack in reaction to the new challenges in the cyber security landscape.
