Landau’s collaboration with director James Cameron led to three Oscar nominations and a best picture win for Titanic in 1997. Their partnership also produced the blockbuster hit Avatar and its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water.

Starting his career in the 1980s as a production manager, Landau rose through the ranks and became a producer on Titanic. The film was a massive success, becoming the first to earn over $1 billion worldwide and winning 11 Oscars, including best picture.

In 2009, Landau and Cameron broke new ground with Avatar, a sci-fi epic that set a new standard in 3D technology and became the highest-grossing film of all time. Its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, holds the third spot on the all-time box office list.

Landau played a crucial role in the development of the Avatar franchise, defending the numerous delays in the release of The Way of Water and supporting Cameron’s ambitious plans to film multiple sequels simultaneously. In an interview with The Associated Press in 2022, Landau explained the timeless appeal of movies like Avatar: “One of the things that has not changed is: Why do people turn to entertainment today? Just like they did when the first ‘Avatar’ was released, they do it to escape, to escape the world in which we live.”

At 29, Landau was named executive vice president of feature movies at 20th Century Fox, where he oversaw major hits including Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, and True Lies, the latter marking the beginning of his long-term collaboration with Cameron.

Jon Landau’s legacy as a producer is marked by his ability to bring epic stories to the big screen, leaving a lasting impact on the world of cinema. He will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for his inspiration and leadership in the film industry.
