Jordan Spieth Weighs in on LIV Golf’s Bryson DeChambeau, Overlooking PGA Tour Peers

Jordan Spieth, uniquely positioned as the only PGA Tour player to witness two rounds of 59 by his playing partners, stands firm that neither was the best round he’s seen.

Spieth was present when Cameron Young scored an astonishing 11-under-par 59 at TPC River Highlands during the Travelers Championship’s third round. This remarkable feat came seven years after Spieth watched his close friend Justin Thomas break 60 with a long eagle putt at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

However, Spieth believes that Bryson DeChambeau’s 60 at the 2021 BMW Championship surpasses both. He recalls DeChambeau almost breaking 60, missing only a six-footer at the final hole at Caves Valley.

When asked to pinpoint the best round he’s witnessed, Spieth replied, “I would say Bryson that day because it was a par 72. That might be the answer on those three rounds. Both Cam and Justin were impressive, but Bryson’s round was exceptional.”

Statistics support Spieth’s perspective. DeChambeau’s Caves Valley performance resulted in a 9.913 gain on the field, outshining Thomas’ 9.249 and Young’s 7.845 strokes gained. DeChambeau’s 60 was even more statistically impressive than his 58 at LIV Golf Greenbrier, which had a field gain of 8.74 strokes.

Young, ranked 23rd globally, has yet to claim a PGA Tour victory despite his immense talent. Reflecting on his Travelers performance, Young said, “I didn’t expect it, but it felt rewarding to have a day where good shots paid off. It leaves me with a good feeling.”

Spieth’s observations highlight the incredible skill and competitiveness within professional golf, showcasing extraordinary performances that push the boundaries of the sport.
