What is fetal death?

Fetal death is the spontaneous intrauterine death of a fetus at any time during pregnancy. It is also known as stillbirth when it occurs after 20 weeks of gestation or 28 weeks or more. Fetal death can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetic disorders, infection, maternal health issues, and environmental factors.

The risk of fetal death increases with advanced maternal age, as well as with multiple pregnancies. Women who are pregnant with twins or triplets are at a higher risk of fetal death than those carrying a single fetus. Other risk factors include smoking, alcohol use, and drug use during pregnancy.

When a fetal death occurs, the mother may experience physical symptoms such as cramping, bleeding, and a decrease in fetal movement. The diagnosis of fetal death is usually made with an ultrasound, which can detect the absence of a heartbeat.

The emotional impact of fetal death can be devastating for the mother and her family. Grief, guilt, and depression are common reactions to the loss of a baby. It is important for the mother to seek emotional support from family and friends during this difficult time.

In some cases, a postmortem examination of the fetus may be recommended to determine the cause of death. This can help the parents to understand what happened and may provide some closure.

In the United States, fetal death is reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC collects data on fetal deaths in order to better understand the causes and risk factors associated with fetal death.

Fetal death is a tragic event that can have a profound impact on the mother and her family. It is important for women to take steps to reduce their risk of fetal death, such as avoiding smoking, alcohol, and drugs during pregnancy. It is also important to seek medical care if any signs or symptoms of fetal death are present. Finally, it is important to seek emotional support during this difficult time.
