Rebecca Gayheart has spoken about how her two daughters are coping with the loss of their father, actor Eric Dane, several months after his death. The family has been navigating a major change since Dane, best known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, died in February 2026 following his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. Gayheart has now offered a glimpse into how she and daughters Billie Beatrice and Georgia Geraldine are managing life while continuing with the routines of everyday life.
Gayheart, 55, recently attended the 2026 Annual Inspiration Awards hosted by Step Up, where she discussed her family during a conversation with PEOPLE. Speaking about her daughters, who are both in high school, she acknowledged that the period has been particularly difficult for the family. At the same time, she said they are trying to move forward together and support one another through the changes they are facing.
“You know, we’re hanging in there. I think it’s definitely a challenging season, but we’re doing our best. The girls are both in high school—which is also a big transition under any circumstance—so I’m just staying close to my kids.”
For Gayheart, the circumstances surrounding her daughters’ teenage years have made the situation even more complicated. High school can already bring academic pressure, changing friendships, greater independence and major emotional adjustments. For Billie and Georgia, those ordinary milestones are now taking place while they are also processing the death of their father.
Rather than describing grief as something with a fixed timetable, Gayheart’s comments suggest that the family is taking things one day at a time. Her focus appears to be on staying connected with her children and maintaining a sense of closeness at home. For teenagers dealing with loss, having familiar routines and a dependable family environment can become especially important as they adjust to circumstances that cannot be changed.
Gayheart also spoke about the ways she manages difficult moments herself. When life becomes overwhelming, she said that being surrounded by people she trusts and loves helps her cope. Her children, in particular, remain an important source of comfort.
“friends. My children. Being under the same roof with my kids and having them next to me, safe, always makes me feel better. You know, there are certain people I like to talk to to get my feelings out, but really just—again—being connected to other human beings. That’s what gets me through.”
Her comments highlight an aspect of grief that is often less visible to the public. While celebrities are frequently discussed through their careers and public appearances, personal loss continues away from cameras and headlines. For Gayheart, staying close to her daughters appears to provide a sense of stability while the family adjusts to life without Dane.

The actor had built a long career in television and film, but he became particularly recognizable for playing Dr. Mark Sloan, popularly known as McSteamy, on Grey’s Anatomy. He later appeared as Cal Jacobs in Euphoria and also starred in The Last Ship.
His diagnosis in 2025 brought greater public attention to his personal life and his relationship with his family. During his illness, Dane spoke publicly about his daughters and the importance of his family. His death in February marked a significant loss for Billie and Georgia, who had grown up largely away from the intense spotlight surrounding their parents’ careers.
Gayheart and Dane first met in 2003 and married on October 29, 2004. Their relationship later went through a period of separation, with Gayheart filing for divorce in 2018. The divorce was never finalized, and the two remained closely connected through their daughters. In 2025, Gayheart filed to dismiss the divorce proceedings as Dane dealt with his ALS diagnosis.
The couple welcomed their first daughter, Billie Beatrice, in March 2010. Their second daughter, Georgia Geraldine, was born in December 2011. Parenthood became an important part of Dane’s life, and he spoke publicly over the years about his excitement about becoming a father and his affection for his daughters.
Dane’s relationship with his children remained a significant part of his public story during the final period of his life. In a posthumously released interview recorded before his death, he also addressed Billie and Georgia directly.
