Success isn’t a destination, it’s a journey. And for Erica Odom, that journey has been anything but ordinary.

When Coach Erica flew to Miami earlier this year to film her episode of Women In Power, titled “The Hustle Behind Success,” she brought more than just a compelling story to the studio. She brought a truth that too few people understand, sometimes, you have to lose everything to discover what truly matters.

The $125,000 Lesson

At 19 years old, Erica Odom thought she had it figured out. A young Milwaukee native with drive and determination, she invested $125,000 in her first real estate property, a duplex on the north side of Milwaukee. On paper, she was living the dream.

Then the housing market crashed in 2008.

What she didn’t realize at the time was that she had fallen victim to predatory lending practices. Her mortgage was split into two loans, 20% in a balloon payment and 80% in a five-year adjustable-rate mortgage. When the loans adjusted, her interest rates skyrocketed. Her $125,000 investment was now worth less than a fraction of what she paid.

She sold the property as a short sale for just $15,000 cash.

“I lost everything, money, had to file bankruptcy, intentionally ruined my credit, lived paycheck to paycheck,” Erica later reflected. But she adds something profound, “The key is I didn’t allow these challenges to make me quit.”

What Failure Taught Her

Most people would have walked away from real estate forever. Instead, Erica made a vow, she would have a comeback. She told everyone around her that all she needed was “one property” and that she would grow to be as big as the Mandel Group.

She began educating herself on financial literacy. She pursued her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work. She learned from her mistakes and refused to let shame define her story.

That mindset became the foundation for Odom Investments & Property Management, which she founded in 2018. Today, her portfolio includes buy-and-hold investments and fix-and-flip projects that not only generate returns but revitalize communities.

Building Beyond the Bottom Line

But Erica is about more than just real estate. Her mission runs deeper.

Through the Scale Up Journey Internship Program, she mentors young adults ages 18-25, teaching them the fundamentals of property management, project management, and real estate investing. She hosts financial bootcamps for youth in local school districts. She’s written two books, Journey to Success and Journey to Success, The “Unforgotten” Teen, designed to equip the next generation with financial literacy skills that schools often overlook.

“I am building a legacy, the ODOMWAY,” she says. “When I am gone, I want my work and sacrifices to be remembered. I want it known that this legacy was built for my family, to break the cycles of debt, lack, and unhealthy habits.”

The Recognition

Her dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Recently, Erica was named Woman Entrepreneur of the Year at the Influencer Magazine Awards. Her Women In Power episode, released on August 31, 2026, showcases the journey she’s taken, from financial collapse to community leader and mentor.

As she reflects on the recognition, she reminds entrepreneurs everywhere, “Entrepreneurs don’t always pause to celebrate, we’re too busy building. This award is a reminder that dedication, consistency, and hard work never go unnoticed. Keep going. Your journey matters.”

The Truth About Success

In her own words, Erica shares the philosophy that has carried her through her darkest moments, “What I have learned is it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey, and my journey is still going. I am very grateful and thankful for my wins and losses, and I take nothing for granted.”

That’s the message at the heart of her Women In Power episode, and it’s the message she wants everyone to hear. Success isn’t about never failing. It’s about refusing to let failure be the final word.

As she puts it so powerfully, “Failure is only failure when a person stops and gives up on themself and their dreams and goals. But if you ‘fail’ and continue to strive forward and don’t quit, you are actually the definition of true success and a winner.”
