Few artists embody the word multifaceted as seamlessly as AMARU. A Grammy®-nominated independent recording artist, trained actor, published author, award-winning filmmaker, photographer, and model, AMARU’s career is a living testament to what it means to be fiercely creative and unapologetically independent. His nomination for the International Recognition Award at the Influencer Magazine Awards 2025 celebrates not only his artistry but also the global resonance of his voice and vision.
Born in Suriname, AMARU made his first television debut in his homeland before moving to Europe in the early nineties. Modeling for sculptors and art students sparked his creative journey, but it was his dual studies in acting, spanning Amsterdam and Los Angeles, that cemented his foundation as a storyteller. From film and television to international commercials, his resumé reflects both versatility and perseverance.
Music, however, became the heartbeat of his creative life. His debut project, AMARU: The First EP (2008), paved the way for Champagne Attitude (2018), a full-length album that went on to win two Gold Medals at the Global Music Awards in California. His music videos, brimming with personality and cinematic flair, have since collected dozens of international honors. In 2024, he released his third album, The Crime Of Silence, with singles like Traces Of My Melanin, a stirring visual narrative that has already earned 19 international film awards, and Este Hombre (El Tesoro), a Spanish-language anthem celebrating the LGBTQIA community that soared on Spotify charts worldwide.
Yet AMARU’s influence extends far beyond the stage and screen. With the release of his cookbook AMARU COOKS – A Touch Of Suriname Through Food & Anecdotes (2020), he became the first to publish an English-language culinary collection featuring authentic Surinamese recipes, fusing heritage with storytelling. His second book, Fiercely Independent: The Stories Behind The Music (2022), offered a vulnerable glimpse into the artistry and grit behind his music. Awards for humanitarian impact, recognition from The Taste Awards, and membership in both NARAS and LARAS underscore his standing as a cultural force with global impact. With two new albums on the horizon, slated for release in Fall 2025 and Spring 2026, AMARU continues to innovate and inspire. His music, described as Urban Inspirational Pop with a Heap of Latin Soul, is more than sound; it is story, spirit, and a call for authenticity. Most recently, he returned from the ISSA Awards in Atlanta, Georgia (U.S.A.), where on August 23rd, 2025, he won three honors for his music: the GOLD award for Best International Male Vocalist 2025, the SILVER award for Best International Male Songwriter, and the title of Best Dressed Male 2025.
