Sony Santa Monica’s Next Game Isn’t a New IP: But It Might Feel Like One

Sony Santa Monica, the acclaimed studio behind God of War, is reportedly not working on a brand-new IP for its next big project, though fans might feel otherwise when they see it.

According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who clarified recent speculation during a discussion on ResetEra (via Eurogamer), the studio’s upcoming game is led by God of War director Cory Barlog and is progressing well. “Cory Barlog’s game is Sony Santa Monica’s next big thing,” Schreier confirmed, adding, “Last time I spoke to anyone about it (a month or two ago), it was going well.”

Following his comments, fans quickly began speculating that the mystery title could mark the debut of a new IP. However, Schreier has since refuted those assumptions. “I’ll put it this way: it’s not a new IP but it might feel like one,” he explained. “Maybe that’s why people are confused.” He also made it clear that he won’t be sharing further details unless through formal reporting: “Please don’t ask me more questions about this — if I wind up reporting more information at any point in the future, it’ll be in an article, not on a forum.”

For years, rumors have circulated suggesting Barlog’s next game would explore the sci-fi genre. Schreier dismissed these claims, stating bluntly, “The sci-fi stuff (that people have apparently believed for years now?) is nonsense.”

While Sony Santa Monica hasn’t officially confirmed its next project, whispers of a potential third installment in the God of War series persist following the success of Ragnarok in 2022. For now, the studio remains tight-lipped about its future plans.
