Tenacious D Returns with a Powerful Cover to Support Wildfire Relief

Tenacious D is back with fresh music, marking their first release since taking a hiatus last year. The dynamic duo—Jack Black and Kyle Gass—have reunited to deliver a heartfelt cover of REO Speedwagon’s classic hit, “Keep On Loving You.” More than just a musical comeback, this track serves a noble cause, raising funds for those impacted by the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.

The cover is part of an all-star compilation album titled Good Music To Lift Los Angeles, which dropped on February 7 via the Good Music Bandcamp page. Featuring contributions from artists such as Death Cab For Cutie, R.E.M., The Armed, Health, King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard, and Chelsea Wolfe, the album aims to provide financial aid to the L.A. Regional Food Bank and California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Fund. These organizations offer vital support to those displaced by the recent catastrophic events in the city.

Tenacious D’s rendition of the REO Speedwagon classic is no random choice—it’s a song they’ve performed numerous times over the years, always adding their signature energy to it. Fans can listen to the fresh version now and revisit one of their past live performances of the song as well.

This isn’t the first time in recent months that Jack Black and Kyle Gass have put their own spin on iconic tracks. In March 2024, their rocked-up version of Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time” went viral, generating widespread buzz. The track was later included in the soundtrack for Kung Fu Panda 4, where Black reprises his role as the voice of Po, the beloved animated warrior.

Their impromptu surprise covers didn’t end there. At a stop in Glasgow, the pair broke into a rendition of Scottish band Travis’ hit song “Turn,” leaving fans of the original band members babbling with excitement. Not long after that, their impromptu performance of Oasis’ “Champagne Supernova” in Brighton caught headlines. These unexpected musical moments came as part of the band’s ‘Spicy Meatball’ tour across the UK, a run of shows that reinforced their ability to entertain and surprise fans at every turn.

While covers have been a significant part of their recent musical output, the last original song from Tenacious D was “Video Games,” a standalone single released in 2023. At the time, they hinted at working on a new album, fueling excitement among fans eager for fresh material. However, those plans took an unexpected detour in July.

During a performance at the ICC Sydney Theater on July 14, Kyle Gass made a controversial joke referencing the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. The incident had taken place just a day earlier, with the now-President surviving a gunshot wound to his ear during a campaign rally. The remark led to a wave of backlash, resulting in the cancellation of all their remaining tour dates and ultimately contributing to their decision to step away from the spotlight for a while.

Despite the controversy and their short hiatus, Tenacious D’s return with new music is an indicator that all hope is not lost on their signature blend of humor, rock, and passion. As for the musical offering, Tenacious D’s cover version of “Keep On Loving You” shows that though its artists are capable of using their art to help those in need in hard times.

As fans embrace this new release, many will undoubtedly be wondering what’s next for the duo. Whether it’s more covers, original music, or another surprise viral moment, Tenacious D remains as unpredictable as ever. For now, their latest track stands as both a musical revival and a meaningful contribution to an important cause.
