Amazon has made a significant move in the entertainment industry by securing “creative control” over the James Bond franchise in a deal worth more than $1 billion. This decision, which shifts a major aspect of 007’s future to the tech giant, has sparked a variety of reactions from those closely connected to the legendary spy series.
Amazon MGM Studios announced the agreement on Thursday, revealing that it had formed a joint venture with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. The two heirs of Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, the longtime producer of Bond films, have been responsible for shaping the franchise for decades. While the financial details remain undisclosed, sources suggest that Amazon acquired creative control for approximately $1 billion, a figure first reported by the Hollywood news outlet Deadline.

Daniel Craig, who portrayed James Bond from 2006’s Casino Royale to 2021’s No Time To Die, publicly expressed his support for Broccoli and Wilson following the deal. He acknowledged their contributions to the franchise and shared his gratitude: “My respect, admiration, and love for Barbara and Michael remain constant and undiminished. I wish Michael a long, relaxing (and well-deserved) retirement, and whatever ventures Barbara goes on to do, I know they will be spectacular, and I hope I can be part of them.”
Not everyone, however, shares Craig’s optimism. Valerie Leon, an actress known for her roles in The Spy Who Loved Me and Never Say Never Again, voiced concerns about the franchise losing its British essence under Amazon’s influence. Speaking on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, the 81-year-old actress reflected on how much the industry has evolved, stating, “The Bond franchise was very British, and it won’t be any more. Life changes, everything moves on and changes.” She also pointed out the shifting landscape of film distribution, remarking, “If they make films, they won’t go into the cinema … everything is so changed now. It just won’t be the same, and I’m very old-fashioned anyway.”
By taking creative control, Amazon now holds the authority to produce new James Bond films and potentially expand the universe through television spin-offs. Previously, any major creative decisions required the approval of Broccoli and Wilson, who have long safeguarded the integrity of the iconic character originally created by Ian Fleming in 1953.
Fans of the franchise are left wondering how Amazon’s involvement will shape Bond’s future. While some see this as an opportunity for fresh storytelling and broader global reach, others fear that the essence of the suave British spy might be compromised. Amazon has already made substantial investments in content creation, including its acquisition of MGM in 2022, and this move further cements its ambition to dominate the entertainment landscape.
The Bond franchise has been in limbo since No Time To Die premiered in 2021. With no official announcements about the next installment, the wait for Bond’s return has now stretched to four years, potentially marking the longest hiatus in the history of the series. Speculation is rife about who will take up the mantle next, but with Amazon in charge, the direction of the character could take a surprising turn.
While the future of 007 remains uncertain, what is clear is that this deal signifies a major shift in the franchise’s history. Whether this transition brings about an exciting new chapter or alters the core of James Bond as fans know it remains to be seen.
