Margot Robbie opens up about her fearless approach to one of her most talked-about scenes in The Wolf of Wall Street. The actress speaks candidly about her approach, speaking during an appearance on the Talking Pictures podcast about the decisions made while playing Naomi Lapaglia alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.
Today at 34, Robbie remembered how director Martin Scorsese had offered to modify the intense scene to make her feel more comfortable. Still, she insisted on what she wanted to deliver artistically.
She recalled Scorsese saying, “Maybe you can be wearing a robe if you’re not comfortable.” But Robbie wanted to stay in character, replying, That’s not what she would do in that scene. The whole point is that she’s going to come out completely naked—that’s the card she’s playing.” That dedication to authenticity became one of the defining moments of her career.
The Barbie star also shared how difficult it was to get the role of Naomi Lapaglia. She said that her managers made her redo her audition tape five times before it met their expectations.
“My managers made me redo my audition tape five times because it wasn’t good enough,” she admitted, underlining how hard she had to work to impress the casting team.
Robbie has described the final audition she was part of, in which she showed a risky step that she could have been penalized for-or gained-her. The moment that defined that scene is where Naomi flings water at Jordan Belfort’s face. Robbie describes how she came to this choice.
“I thought, I could kiss Leonardo DiCaprio right now, and that would be awesome,” she laughed. But instead, she decided to take a more audacious approach. “I thought. nah. And just walloped him in the face. It was dead silence for what felt like an eternity but was probably three seconds.”
Robbie’s gamble paid off. She recounted the moment when DiCaprio and Scorsese broke into laughter. \”Leo and Marty were laughing so hard, they said ‘that was great.’ I was thinking, I’m going to get arrested, I’m pretty sure that’s assault, battery.\”
Reflecting on the scene, Robbie pointed out the risks she took in order to bring to life her character and how those choices cinched her reputation as an unfearing actress.
Since her breakout role in The Wolf of Wall Street, Robbie has turned out to be one of the most versatile stars in Hollywood, for which she received praise for films such as Once Upon a Time. in Hollywood, I, Tonya, and Barbie. Now, the Australian actress, however, revealed that she is taking time off to become a mom. This is because she recently became a mother by giving birth to her first child. She is still on maternity leave.
Despite this break, the fans can look forward to more of Robbie in the coming years, as several big projects are lined up for release next year. Her ability to completely throw herself into her roles, combined with her fearless approach to storytelling, continues to make her one of the most compelling performers of her generation.
