Full List of Phones Losing WhatsApp Support in 2025

WhatsApp is making changes to its compatibility with older operating systems, which means several outdated smartphones will no longer support the app. While this update won’t impact a significant number of users, those holding on to devices more than a decade old should take note.

Key Dates for WhatsApp Compatibility Updates

  1. January 1, 2025: WhatsApp will discontinue support for Android KitKat OS and older versions.
  2. May 5, 2025: Support for iOS versions earlier than 15.1 will end.

Impacted Android Devices

Android users with devices running KitKat may still be able to use WhatsApp if they can update to a newer OS. However, several older models no longer receive official updates, making them ineligible. Attempting manual updates or modifications to these devices may void warranties or risk rendering the phone inoperable.

Here are the Android phones confirmed to lose WhatsApp support starting January 1, 2025:

  • Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
  • Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
  • HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
  • LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
  • Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

Impacted iPhones

From May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will stop working on iPhones running iOS versions earlier than 15.1. While some users can update their devices, others are restricted by hardware limitations. For example, the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus cannot be updated beyond iOS 12.5.7 and will lose access to WhatsApp.

Why Are These Changes Happening?

Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, states that these updates are part of ongoing efforts to maintain app security and functionality, ensuring compatibility with newer hardware and software. The updates apply to both the standard WhatsApp app and WhatsApp Business.

What Should You Do?

If your phone is on this list, check whether it can be updated to a compatible OS. For users with unsupported devices, upgrading to a newer phone is the only option to continue using WhatsApp.

Stay informed to avoid disruptions and ensure your device meets the latest system requirements for WhatsApp in 2025.
