Dan plays James Bond, in essence, a suave, intelligent secret agent. Behind the silver screen is different; Dan has to deal with very demanding aspects of the role, which sometimes leave him literally emotionally and physically exhausted.
Craig is the iconic character from 2006 to 2021. He has left his indelible mark on the Bond franchise, but the grueling process of filming the films has been a tolling endeavor. Every movie is such a massive undertaking that leaves him feeling emotionally drained and spiritually depleted.
The paradox of success together with high monetary recompense created a false sense of security. The lure of stardom as well as the constant offers beckoned him to forget his own well-being. Craig admitted candidly, “Early on with Bond I thought I had to do other work but I didn’t. I was getting to be a star or whatever that means and people wanted to put me in their movie. Incredible.”
However, this relentless pursuing of work due to expectation from other parties and financial recompense would finally lead a person into a sense of emptiness. As Craig reflected on his own self: “Most actors are out of work for large chunks so you take your job offers, but they left me empty, then, bottom line I got paid.”
Playing Bond took a physical and emotional toll. Every movie seemed to take Craig to his limits. It was an enormous dedication and sacrifice that was required from him. The shooting schedules were grueling, not to mention the intense physical training that was required. Physically, he was exhausted, but the emotional burden of portraying such a complex and iconic character also weighed on his mental health.
Craig shared, “I was so exhausted at the end of a Bond it would take me six months to recover emotionally. I always had the attitude that life must come first and, when work came first for a while, it strung me out.”
As Craig is leaving the role of James Bond, his honest musings shed light on some of the dilemmas faced by actors who play iconic characters. His experiences emphasize how vital it is to care for mental and physical well-being even in the midst of significant success.
