Marvel Studios has once again stoked fan speculation by revealing that Chris Evans will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). As for what he’ll do, the details remain as vague as ever, but a lot of fans believe that he’ll be playing Captain HYDRA, an evil, alternate version of Steve Rogers.
This has evoked mixed feelings from the fan-base. There are fans, who can’t wait to see Evans once again on the silver screen, in this case as the bad guy. Fans already envision a spectacular confrontation with Captain America (Anthony Mackie) and Captain HYDRA – something which is sure to be an intense, cinematic spectacle as well as a great emotional one.
Others fear that this action would undermine the effect of Evans’s goodbye in Avengers: Endgame. His departure was an emotional moment, bringing an end to an era. Bringing him back so soon would undermine the emotional weight of his exit.
“Never seen such a forced effort to rekindle the Avengers: Endgame excitement of the MCU,” one fan expressed on social media. Another added, “Why. WHY MARVEL?! I mean as much as I love Chris Evans, this makes no sense, variant or not, his send-off was perfect & for a reason!”
This opened up a new world of possibilities for the MCU, where one could return in different ways. Some fans feel that this is a creative freedom, but others fear that it may result in overexposure and losing the narrative thread.
“Feels too quick to do this. This should be in like 10 years from Endgame. Doing it now just highlights it’s a Hail Mary to get people to care again,” another fan said.
